Writer Austin Hagwood had a layover in Honolulu so why not got chase some bonefish... 'Ten minutes from the airport, I walked down a dock and met Capt. Chris Wright, a 40-year-old fish whisperer born and raised on Oahu. He put a 7-weight fly rod in my right hand, shook the other and emitted a reassuring level of infectious enthusiasm. Wright, who appeared on the fishing show Top Ho**er, describes Hawaiian bonefish the way surfers hail waves: “They’re hard. They’re wily. They’re big.”' Read the full story at AnglersJournal.com

No trip to Bimini was complete without a visit to Ansil’s boat shop to sit with him and listen to some of his stories. Such a wonderful man who had a wonderful impact on fishing and civil rights. 📷

For a short time, my life felt as perfectly balanced as the 11-foot surf rod riding on my shoulder as I clomped along a beach in waders, a converted Army surplus plug bag bouncing on my hip, a piece of pot warp found on the sand serving as a shoulder strap. I could pick up the rod in my sleep, open the bail and uncork a cast that traveled straight and true into the night. I was catching well and was as comfortable in my skin as I’d ever been. The Anglers Journal Book Club is back! Our next book is "Blood Knots," by Luke Jennings. Growing up in the 1960s, Jennings was fascinated by the mysterious life he found in local rivers and lakes. Using library books, he taught himself to fish until a series of mentors entered his life. One teacher was a young intelligence officer who taught him the art of dry-fly fishing. Blood Knots is about fishing, friendship, honor and discovery. The book is highly regarded as one of the best fishing memoirs in circulation. David Coggins is a longtime writer based in New York City. He has written for a number of magazines including Esquire and Financial Times. He covers a range of topics from travel, culture and men's fashion, but one of Coggins' strongest passions is fly fishing.

In his latest book, The Believer: A Year in the Fly Fishing Life, Coggins embarks on seven fishing pilgrimages to some of the world's top fisheries. He visits Norway, Cuba, Belize, Spain, Argentina and more. He tests his skills and jumps outside his comfort zone. He silences his phone and focuses on immersing himself in the pursuit. His writing is poignant and funny, honest and fresh, mixing travel and fishing challenges into a delicious soup that any angler can appreciate.

Coggins joins the Anglers Journal Podcast to discuss his journeys, and reflect on how the world perceives passionate anglers and their need to fly off to a foreign land knowing full and well that the fish they are after may never even show up. Because, after all, it's about more than just pulling on a fish. Listen here: https://www.anglersjournal.com/podcast/author-david-coggins

When Sea Vee Boats announced it was discontinuing one of its most popular boats, the 390Z, from its line of center consoles and replacing it with a new model, it made a lot of waves. The 390 debuted at the Miami International Boat Show in 2006 and had a sleek, sexy look, lots of fishing space, plenty of power and a great ride. It was a showstopper. The Miami-based builder updated it several years later with a stepped hull, and it continued to sell well. That begs the question: If it ain’t broke, why the new model?

The owners of SeaVee are avid anglers who understand the evolving wants and needs of today’s hardcore fishing crews, namely more power and more systems. It was time to make some changes, and that’s where the 400Z comes into play. Check out the full review: https://www.anglersjournal.com/boats-gear/new-boat-seavee-400z
