The Worm Moon By JOHN FLORA ©2023
As it appears Sunday before its peak illumination. Named the worm moon by various Native American tribes in the 18th century in reference to different creatures emerging from their winter hideouts to welcome spring, the 2023 March moon will reach peak illumination at 7:42 a.m. ET Tuesday, March 7, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.
Photo taken from Ketchikan's bypass, March 05, 2023. Snow covered Deer Mountain is in the background.

Our Story

SitNews was created in 1997 by Mary Kauffman after retiring from an almost 30 year teaching career. Kauffman holds degrees in History, Social Studies & a Masters in Education.

Today, SitNews continues to be locally owned and operated by Mary Kauffman who has resided in the community of Ketchikan since 1983 - relocating from Anchorage. She has served as its web-master, graphic designer, editor, etc. for almost 22 years.

In 1999, her husband Richard (Dick) Kauffman retired from the Federal Aviation Administration and joined in as the SitNews editor until his death in February 2007.

SitNews was provided as a not-for-profit by the Kauffmans for 8 years... from 1997 until 2005. In mid-2005, SitNews became a licensed Alaska business and began offering commercial advertising to meet basic operational costs and to expand publication features such as historical articles, columns, etc.
