Boat capsizes off of Second Sand Beach; two bodies recovered

By John Raffel

The sad ending to a tragic event came early on Monday evening when the Michigan State Police, Marine Services Unit, announced it had located a boat which had capsized on Saturday and also located the persons involved with the accident.
The MSP said the victims were deceased and located in an area nearly 220 feet deep. The announcement said the families have been notified and no names will be released.
The Michigan State Police reported earlier on Monday that the MSP, Marine Services Unit, along with assistance from the United State Coast Guard and local sheriffs departments ‘scoured’ the area along Second Sand Beach in Lake Superior on Sunday in an attempt to locate a capsized boat and two missing individuals.
Lt. Mark Giannunzio, spokesperson for the MSP, said in a statement on Monday morning some debris had been located but the boat and missing people had not been located. He said search teams and the Marine Services unit would be back in the area on Monday to continue the search.
On Saturday, MSP confirmed that at 12:15 p.m. on June 8, troopers from the Calumet post, along with deputes from the Houghton and Baraga County sheriff’s department, were dispatched to an area off of Second Sand Beach for a capsized 21-foot boat.
Giannunzio reported on Saturday that five people were on the boat at the time it sank. A person in another boat near the area responded to the scene and was able to rescue 3 of the 5 people. The boat had not been located and two people remained missing at that time.
Giannunzio said the Coast Guard responded with a helicopter from Traverse City and a boat from Coast Guard Station Portage. A Coast Guard spokesman from the office in Sault Ste. Marie confirmed with the Sentinel its participation in the rescue and referred all comments to the state police.
Giannunzio said the Michigan State Police, Marine Services Unit, was also responding to the scene to assist.
It was believed these individuals were participating in the L’Anse Lake Trout Fishing Tournament. However it has not been officially confirmed with tournament officials.
But the Baraga County Next Gen team announced on Facebook over the weekend it would be donating all money raised at the tournament to help the families affected. The posting also stated:
“As most of you know, there was a horrible tragedy in our community, and at this time, there are no further details. Team ‘Give Heaven Some Fish’ has been profoundly affected by this incident, and we are starting a GoFundMe to help the families through this tragedy.
“The Baraga County Next Gen Team would like to start a GoFundMe for the two families affected by the boating accident that occurred during our fishing tournament on Saturday, June 8. We offer our deepest condolences to the friends and families of the two missing fishermen and will be donating all the profits made during the fishing tournament.
“Please keep all those affected in your thoughts and prayers, and all who are searching.”

At Superior Lanes in Marquette this past weekend the L'Anse girls team won their second meet of the year.
The girls, goys, and X Team all bowled against teams from Marquette on the second shift of the day. The L'Anse girls team consisted of Keyshia Supanich, Laci Numinen, Nataliegh Aleo, Natalie Laramore, and Willow Rexford this week.
“They won their meet 29 points to Marquette's 11 points,” coach Paul Moore said. “They bowled extremely close all day with many close Baker and Individual games. L'Anse won six points by winning three of the six baker matches. Five individual points wins came with each lady winning one of their individual games of the two bowled. The team won the 10 points for game totals with matches of 518-478 and 497-475. They also won the 8 points for total pins for the day (baker plus the two game match totals).
“All of the girls performed well, with Nataleigh Aleo having the high girls game of 144. She also bowled a 131. Willow and Natalie Laramore struggled a bit for this meet being the first meet away from home. Willow bowled a 116 and Keyshia a 112 for other notable scores. Laci bowled a 105 game, which shows continued improvements as well with many single pin leaves. They bowled extremely well as a team and supported each other throughout the day. A few other games to note was, even with a league determined oil pattern, the bowlers found them to be a little oilier than expected, but they made adjustments throughout the day.”
L’Anse lost to Marquette 39-1 for meet points.
“Both teams bowled with many first-year bowlers,” Moore said, “and even though it was a one sided points win, there were very close matches and baker games as well. The boys team consisted of Sam Hiltunen, Courtney Deschaine, Jerry Fish, Aiden Rexford and Kydan Dean. Sam Hiltunen captured the boys point with an individual game win and bowling the boys team's highest game of 145. Aiden Rexford had the next highest game bowling a 116 and Kydan Dean a 102.
“Jerry recently joined the team and bowled with only two practice sessions under his belt. The team struggled to find the strike pocket and converting spares. They enjoyed the outing and learned things throughout the day and things we need to work on at practice still.”
The L'Anse X team consisted of Karistina Magnant, Izabella Grafton, and Autumn Durant.
“With some students working and some with prior commitments we had to bowl two members short for this meet,” Moore said. “The Marquette X team bowled with four bowlers, so they were short one player as well. The L'Anse team scored no meet points for the outing, but had a great day of bowling and improved on their games. Bowling two short is a tall order to deal with, but they each encouraged each other throughout the day and also cheered on their opponents as well showing great sportsmanship.
“Autumn bowled the high game of 79 for the day and Karistina followed with a 65. Improvements and tweaks to skills were noted. The coaches anticipate having all the teams fully staffed for the next meet. We also took some notes on things to work on this week at practice and again working on getting the bowlers to take more time on the approaches and focusing before they start their throws. Being the first meet away from our practice lanes, overall things went well. The bowlers will get more and more use to adjusting for conditions at each bowling center we attend.”
The next meet is Dec. 16 will be at Recreation Lanes in Iron Mountain.
L’Anse bowls the early shift starting at 11 a.m. with the boys and girls bowling for match scores and the X Team against Westwood's X Team.
