Boat capsizes off of Second Sand Beach; two bodies recovered
By John Raffel
The sad ending to a tragic event came early on Monday evening when the Michigan State Police, Marine Services Unit, announced it had located a boat which had capsized on Saturday and also located the persons involved with the accident.
The MSP said the victims were deceased and located in an area nearly 220 feet deep. The announcement said the families have been notified and no names will be released.
The Michigan State Police reported earlier on Monday that the MSP, Marine Services Unit, along with assistance from the United State Coast Guard and local sheriffs departments ‘scoured’ the area along Second Sand Beach in Lake Superior on Sunday in an attempt to locate a capsized boat and two missing individuals.
Lt. Mark Giannunzio, spokesperson for the MSP, said in a statement on Monday morning some debris had been located but the boat and missing people had not been located. He said search teams and the Marine Services unit would be back in the area on Monday to continue the search.
On Saturday, MSP confirmed that at 12:15 p.m. on June 8, troopers from the Calumet post, along with deputes from the Houghton and Baraga County sheriff’s department, were dispatched to an area off of Second Sand Beach for a capsized 21-foot boat.
Giannunzio reported on Saturday that five people were on the boat at the time it sank. A person in another boat near the area responded to the scene and was able to rescue 3 of the 5 people. The boat had not been located and two people remained missing at that time.
Giannunzio said the Coast Guard responded with a helicopter from Traverse City and a boat from Coast Guard Station Portage. A Coast Guard spokesman from the office in Sault Ste. Marie confirmed with the Sentinel its participation in the rescue and referred all comments to the state police.
Giannunzio said the Michigan State Police, Marine Services Unit, was also responding to the scene to assist.
It was believed these individuals were participating in the L’Anse Lake Trout Fishing Tournament. However it has not been officially confirmed with tournament officials.
But the Baraga County Next Gen team announced on Facebook over the weekend it would be donating all money raised at the tournament to help the families affected. The posting also stated:
“As most of you know, there was a horrible tragedy in our community, and at this time, there are no further details. Team ‘Give Heaven Some Fish’ has been profoundly affected by this incident, and we are starting a GoFundMe to help the families through this tragedy.
“The Baraga County Next Gen Team would like to start a GoFundMe for the two families affected by the boating accident that occurred during our fishing tournament on Saturday, June 8. We offer our deepest condolences to the friends and families of the two missing fishermen and will be donating all the profits made during the fishing tournament.
“Please keep all those affected in your thoughts and prayers, and all who are searching.”
