Bob Hoffnar created an interactive performance combining music, low frequency tones, the acoustics of the room and the movement of the audience. It is an amazing experience that art galleries and spaces can offer their patrons. The problem is - it is very difficult for Bob to describe to the booking agent over the phone.

Bob called me to see if we could capture the experience in video, something that he could show a gallery after explaining it. Even though I have a pretty good understanding of everything involved in the show, I still did not understand correctly when he described it to me, so I knew it was going to be a challenging task. Capturing and presenting the show has been my biggest creative challenge so far in video production, and the eight minute video both explains and illustrates the experience the audience member has through sound and moving image, making it much easier for bookers to visualize and move forward with booking.

Hoffnar's investment in this digital media tool helped him book the show in Los Angeles, Mexico City and in cities across Europe.

Starting today, every day you will be able to see my work. Up until — ten days ago — I had never taken the time to organize the thousands of deliverables I have produced over the years, and it has been really exciting to re-discover so many incredible moments that have been captured, and I am SUPER EXCITED to start sharing them with the world!!

These reels are made with Instagram in mind, but I will also be experimenting with putting them on LinkedIn, Facebook and Youtube. I think this series highlights the fact that capturing performances is a very smart way to get professional audio recordings, archival footage, and also stills and video clips to use to promote your choir, orchestra, ensemble, or any of the many other performing arts disciplines.

I want to thank all of my clients over the past 13 years who have brought me and my team on, as I transitioned from being a studio recording engineer to a specialist in live concert classical music recording, and went from archiving video 10 years ago on a single GoPro (thank you Stephen Bright!) to producing tapings and livestreams with multiple camera and my trusty team of technicians. It has been quite a journey, and looking forward is even more exciting as Tonehaus is positioned now to really be able to help performing arts organizations develop their funding, programs, audiences and grow!

Just a week ago Sunday we had our last concert taping of the ’23-’24 season, and I feel such gratitude to work with such amazing clients and artists. I can't express my thanks to my special clients this year! I profoundly enjoy capturing the sound, the space, the light, the emotion and the magic of these performances. I love this work! Every year we progress and the progress Tonehaus has made this year has been great. I am delivering more done for less, with continued improvements -- things are more and more dialed in.

A year and a half ago, I decided to produce a livestream of a strongman competition because I thought it would be fun and help a friend out, but also because I wanted to learn all the ins and outs required. Well, it was a LOT of work. AND, it was a lot of fun!

I wanted to go through the process start to finish to put together all of the graphic elements, produce sponsor videos to show in the stream, and include camera motion without camera ops.

The stream ended up being a marathon 10 hours long! The stream and recordings were glitch free.

It was a resounding success. Even though this isn't our core specialty of streaming and taping concert performances, a lot of the skills are exactly the same. I learned a lot from this process, and wrote a blog about it.

I've updated the website a little bit, and hope to get some more blog posts with photos happening over the next months.

Here is an interesting post about tape formulations. I don't know exactly who this person is, or his dad, but if it is true his dad was quite a genius.

Analog and digital audio tape is nothing but polyester with iron oxide particles adhered to it. Iron oxide, because iron will remember its magnetic state, and a tape machine head is simply an electromagnet that will either impart magnetic information as the tape passes over it, or read the information.

That is part of the reason why 3M, the experts with Scotch tape, were so good at making analog tape. Everybody knows their expertise in sticking things to other things, and sticking iron oxide to polyester fits that profile. 3M's 996 tape was considered the best of the best.

Some random info from a customer who bought a deck from me on Reverb. Might be useful for some of you:

Side note: My dad holds the patent for the majority of modern magnetic tape polymer binders. Everybody from Ampex, BASF, TDK , SONY all of them bought from my dad's chemical company. Including the Ampex TP tapes. He also has the patent for the binders that make the digital audio tape. There was a major problem with that one.. Sony tried for several years to manufacture the tape to put out the DAT. But they couldn't get the actual tape to work. The particles in the DAT tape were made out of something called Barium Ferrite (BaFe12O19), (if I remember correctly) and my dad was saying it has an odd shape and So it was very difficult for them to formulate a polymer binder to hold everything together correctly. So Sony came to my dad and he solved it.

Here's the info. The SSS happened because the binders that were used in the tapes prior to my dad's formulations were prone to absorb water. They used to use a type of polyurethane glue. The urethane glue was hydrophilic and a moisture in the air would get absorbed and basically perform a sort of hydrolysis. The only cure for it was baking the tapes.. which in and of itself was a complete pain in the ass, lol.

My dad's formulation changed all of that. He created a magnetic coating for forming magnetic recording media comprising a particulate magnetizable material and a dispersant intimately blended with an electron being curable cross-linked binder. The binder is actually formed of a polyurethane resin and terminated onto polyester.

Fantastic debut performance on Saturday by Carlos Alberto Cordero Garcia's new group un/heard...! Grateful to have been chosen to capture the performance in picture and sound. As you can see in the video monitor below, the dramatic lighting fits right into this program titled: "into the darkness." Am loving this and looking forward to the next one!
