Breathing is supposed to be natural, but sometimes we need to take some intentional breaths.

In Genesis we see that God breathed life into man literally. And the same word for Spirit and breath is ruah.

With a simple breath, practice, such as extending your exhale by one or two counts your heart rate will slow down and this will send a message to your brain, saying that everything is more peaceful and calm then it was a few minutes ago. The brain then shifts to rest-and-digest mode of the nervous system.

On the weekends, I try to do a practice called the Examen. In short, it is a series of questions to help you reflect on the week (or day) and notice where God is present, where He feels distant, etc.

These birds were the answer I wrote for the question about when I felt the most connected to God this past week. I saw these birds when I was paddleboarding on a very peaceful lake and the wonder of them caused me to sense God’s presence.

Here’s a sampling (short version of the Examen that I often use. It’s a helpful way to heighten your awareness of the presence of God in your ordinary days.

🔵 Ask God to shine a gentle light on the past week and bring events and people to mind.
🔵 What was life-giving to me from this past week? What events or experiences were filled with light and life? Give thanks.
🔵 When did I give and receive the most love?
🔵 When did I give and receive the least love?
🔵 When did I have the deepest sense of connection with God or sense His presence the strongest?
🔵 When did I have the least connection with God, perhaps feeling rattled or lacking peace?
🔵 Is there something I want or need for the coming days? I ask Him for that.
🔵 With a thankful heart, give Him the coming week.

Some tips for enjoying gardens or gardening, even if you’ve never tended a garden.

I love gardening! But it wasn’t always so. I didn’t know the first thing about growing a plant or a veggie. But once I started, by trial and error, it thoroughly had me hooked! The feeling of my hands in soil, the slow process of watering, the joy of seeing little sprouts pop up, and the pure thrill and satisfaction of seeing a flower in full bloom or eating a snap pea I grew. There’s nothing like it.

Start with one pot. Start by going to a farmer’s market and bringing home something straight from a farm. Savor and enjoy the fruits of your (or others) labor.

I soaked in, and prayed this verse for myself and others this morning.
I reminded myself that the Almighty, Magnificent, All-Powerful God created everything I was looking at this morning. He hung the stars in the sky and made the powerful seas, and also the tiny ladybugs 🐞 and wonderful hummingbirds. 🐦
How can I doubt His ability to care for me and those I love? Can He handle my small - and big - requests? Yes, absolutely!

Are you praying for something that seems unattainable, friends? Do you doubt Him? Maybe you feel He is not even interested. I remind you, He sees you and He is more than able. 💪

What lights up your life?
I’ve listed a few things and would love to hear yours.

Holding space for others to connect with each other and God is another thing that lights up my life and today these women entertained the same question, creating a piece that reflected this. Here’s just a few glimpses at today’s Play Retreat!

Play is lost on us as adults. We need to do things to lose all sense of time and taking ourselves so seriously.
Today we created, paddled, kayaked, ate, danced, sang, stretched, rested, played cards, and even a few tears of joy. A good day. 💕

We’ve had such positive feedback on this series! If you’ve missed any episodes, summer may be a good time to catch up. In this series we talked about the effects of rushing in all areas of our life, including our nervous system. We walked through how people pleasing, over-caffeinating and over-exercising can be taxing on our systems, and we gave you simple steps and hope to hit pause on the rushing. Yesterday in the Entrepreneur’s Playfround, we did a little treasure hunting with God. He led me to this tiny little bloom on a plant I have. It is literally the only bloom on the plant. The word that immediately popped into my mind was *hope*.
I have been praying for a person and a situation recently and it’s been challenging because I see very little fruit from those prayers, at least the way I want to see them answered. Sometimes you wonder if it’s even worth praying?

And then God gives you a tiny little bloom to remind you that He’s always at work , even when things look barren, and at any moment, he can break through with color and life!

If you are in need of hope today, I pray this encourages you as well. ❤️

My friends have a school opening in September!
Sheila and Carsten are a mother-son duo with a collective experience of over 30 years in education.
They chose the name because they wanted a name that embodied the most important thing, the home.
At Homestead Elementary your kids will feel safe, like they feel at home. Not only will they receive individualized and, but they will receive encouragement to know, trust, and love God.
Homestead Elementary will integrate the finest aspects of private and public school instruction. This is a school where the Bible, the flag, and the home are respected. There are advantages to a small one-room-style schoolhouse for your child's learning and development. Sheila and Carsten are bringing back what did work in our country's history: the simplicity of the one room schoolhouse model.

Rest, margin and Sabbath is what I teach and share very passionately about. Why? 😏 Because I’ve had to fight so hard to make it a permanent part of my life.

😵‍💫 And… I literally shudder at the thought of where I’d be, and what my overall health would be if I hadn’t fought for this rest.

➡️ It’s counter-culture.
➡️ It doesn’t come natural.
➡️ You might miss out on things.
➡️ You might feel lazy.
👏 And you might find a flourishing life with God and be fully present to the life and people right in front of you.
