GCSU to host Artober for the community
Georgia College & State University’s inaugural “Artober," an engaging evening of hands-on art demonstrations, live music, theatrical performances, dance and live storytelling, is a chance for campus and community to experience creativity at its best.
This free celebration of fine arts will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30 in GCSU's Ennis Hall, 320 W. Hancock St., Milledgeville. Visitors can explore a range of student projects, interactive demos from student art organizations and faculty-led demonstrations.
“The arts are a vital part of community,” said Matt Forrest, interim chair and associate professor of art. “This fall, the divisions of fine arts from GCSU’s College of Arts & Sciences are coming together to showcase the amazing talent we have on campus.”
Traditionally, the five main fine arts have been painting, sculpture, architecture, music and poetry. At Artober, Georgia College’s Departments of Art, Theatre and Dance, Music and Communication take that further by offering an exhibit of senior capstone artwork and demonstrations in photography, mural painting, silk screening and graphic design.
A preview of GCSU’s upcoming production “Twelfth Night,” including scenic designs and a lighting display Dance selections from “The Nutcracker” and GCSU’s Bountiful Fall Dance Concert Music by GCSU’s Saxophone Quartet and the upcoming Opera Scenes Concert will be shown.
There will also be five short films produced by mass communication students such as a police drama, a documentary of a local skateboard park, and storytelling by three students sharing their personal narratives in a group performance called “Be(longing).”
Student research will be featured, along with the university’s Art and Social Engagement initiative that promotes connections between public interest, scholarly research and student learning. There will also be an exhibit of paintings done “En Plein Air” recently at Andalusia.
Anyone making a foodbank donation during Artober can take home a bowl, cup, plate or cake stand sculpted by Georgia College ceramics students and faculty.
Visitors can also give back by contributing to the university’s student-care program Campus Corner by donating hygiene items; beverages like water, juices and protein drinks; and grab-n-go snacks like peanut butter crackers and Slim Jims.
“We hope people will come and experience a little bit of everything our four departments offer,” Forrest said. “Come enjoy the creativity and talent of our students and faculty through interactive activities and performances that showcase the diverse and dynamic world of the arts at Georgia College.”
