Great start of Akademi Dance Film Festival this morning with APOTHEOSIS by Akademi & The Motion Dance Collective – a pertinent example of screen dance reclaiming the gallery and museum space and context, in this case the British Museum.

We also love the 30 second breather between each film in the line up. So needed after a busy, back to back line up of our Screen.dance 2021. Each screen dance festival should follow suit and allow our eyes a wee rest in respect of each film in their line up.

What is more, Akademi Dance Film Festival is all free and available on demand for an extra 24 hours, so no excuse...

International Women’s Day is on 8 March 2021 and we are asking where are the female filmmakers?

We have always strived for bridging the gender gap in the screen dance world, achieving 50/50 representation from the inception of our Screen.dance festival in 2016.

We have just crunched the numbers for our Screen.dance 2021 – 41 female and 26 male directors across all our competitive and non-competitive programme strands this year – this is 61% female directors of screen dance!

Erika Randall is only one of the 41 female directors. Her film Paula + Francesca (videostill here) is showing as part of Screen.dance 2021 International Jury Awards Finalists. Part 3: Staying In – Redefining the Incredible Indoors on 12 March 2021.

As our Screen.dance website grows we hope that we will continue to be a vital research tool including for female filmmakers, alongside Women Make Film resource celebrating 130 years of cinema by 183 female directors here: https://www.womenmakefilm.net/

It’s almost time to start watching. Get your front row seats booked for our Screen.dance 2021 screening room here. https://www.screen.dance/screen-dance-2021-festival-screening-room/

Our doors will be wide open from 11-13 March 2021!

Festival passes for all events in the festival are available.

Screendance is an expanding genre of artist's moving image created by combining choreographic intention and compositional form, with the language of cinema. The festival is looking for short works that fit this description for screening.
