Here are two recent little guitar studies. No. 41 is in DM. No. 42 is in Am. They may help familiarize the player with the higher fingerboard alternative chords and notes that are more familiar on first position of the guitar fingerboard and also help familiarize students with the higher notes of the fingerboard. There are also 2 volumes of appended guitar studies (Vol. I Studies 1-15, and Vol. II Studies 16-31. I am working towards eventually having 3 volumes I guess.

My main interest and focus in composition is in classical string music, especially with orchestral instruments.

I used part of the first movement of my Symphony No. 3, "The Big Sky Symphony", to accompany this recent video I took of the April 8, 2024 eclipse as seen from Northwest Montana. Is the video of excellent quality? Nope. I didn't think my cheap iPhone would catch anything and I could not aim it carefully because I didn't want to harm my eyes -- nor did I remember to zoom in on the sun. I thought it would be too cloudy, but then a little moment of sunshine made me scramble for what I got. Mainly I am showcasing the cinematic quality of this symphony. It does make a big difference to this little video.

This is my latest symphony, composed in March 2024. The photo here is of the Lemhi Mountain Range that runs to the east of the Sawtooth Mountains. This shot was taken south of Salmon, Idaho in early July, 2023. This photo was picked while listening to the FIRST movement, though the first movement fits other photos as well, depending on the place of the musical passage.

If you listen to all four movements, which one was your favorite? Of course I welcome all comments. The audience and feedback is important to me.

This January (2024) I have worked on a 12th string quartet. I will post one movement at a time here, starting with movement I, so that each movement gets more post recognition. There is a cabin in the Rocky Mountains on the edge of where a forest meets the field. It is deep winter and there have been several days of heavy snowfall. It is early morning and the dawn’s light is dim. Smoke is billowing out of the chimney. There is a view of the cabin from a distant, omnipotent point of view. Someone is coming out of the cabin and walking towards the barn, followed by a couple of romping dogs. The sun rises a little higher, breaking over the mountaintop and bringing more light and color to the field, the forest, the barnyard, and the little cabin. Out in the barnyard is a sleigh hitched up to two horses. The sleigh is drawn up to the cabin, and tumbling out of the door are several little children, all racing for the sleigh. They pile in and off the sleigh goes, down the snow-covered access road with joyful cheers and songs breaking the quietness of the deep, soft, new-fallen snow. The sleigh goes far down the little road, over a little wooden bridge, and then turns into the pasture. The cheerful sounds have dimmed with the distance. The sleigh circles the pasture and then gradually draws back up to the cabin. Everyone piles out, laughing and tussling in the snow. The horses and sleigh are taken back to the barn. Eventually, all run into the cabin for hot chocolate to warm themselves back up again. The day wanes… Evening approaches. The lights shining from the cabin windows look like gems sprinkled on the dim white field of snow in the darkness of the evening. Snow is silently falling… large flakes of beautiful and infinite crystal shapes. It is Christmas eve.

For the last few years, each year, I have had in mind the pattern of wanting to compose a programmatic piece for winter with strings and a selection of bells. There is something about this time of year that drives me to write for bells. So this year (2023), I composed a piece titled, “A Wistful Winter”. Why did I put wistful in the title? I know that the tenor of the world around me has something to do with this in my psyche, and my music reflects that. This music evolves through several emotions.

My latest guitar studies, No.s 37, 38, and 39 which are going to eventually be part of a third volume of Studies for Guitar. Study No. 38 and No. 39 are meditative and focus on right fi*****ng patterns covering the whole fingerboard. Study No. 37 is more lyrical and features a variety of chords up and down the fingerboard. No. 38 is of moderate difficulty and No. 37 is somewhat more difficult. No. 40 is lyrical and somewhat difficult. All are suitable for general performance.

This year I have composed a string quartet (No. 11), a symphonic choral work, Mass Universal, a piano piece (Tenero), and three additional guitar studies (No.s 34, 35, and 36). I am putting these three last guitar studies on my LMP here. I have two volumes of guitar studies that cover studies no. 1 through 30. When I compose a few more studies I will append my studies no. 31 through 36 into a third volume. Additionally, I have put the music of the Mass Universal to a video and published it on YouTube.

I am planning on spending the time going forward towards the end of this year focusing on string quartet and maybe symphonic forms. I use this Face Book account, LMP (Lindgren Music Publishing) to advertise minimally the works that I publish.

The recording of this mass is a synthesized computer recording using Avid’s Sibelius music software called NotePerformer. Because this recording cannot render the pronunciation of the words in the libretto, the words only present as vocal sounds. To compensate, I added the words of the libretto and photographs to follow the music.

May this mass, as a music video, be uplifting to a larger audience than just as a recording alone. This is my intention by making the music into a music video.

It is my strategy as a composer to compose music in many genres, however, my greatest interest is in composition in the areas of classical orchestra and chamber music forms. I hesitated for a long time about doing a large choral work until I decided to compose this mass. I wanted this mass to be based on the spiritual consciousness that I have observed many spiritual traditions have in common. I ended up using A Buddhist Prayer of Forgiveness, The Prayer of St. Francis, Jesus' Sermon on the Mount (Mathew 5:1-12), some verses from the Dhammapada, words from The Gospel of Thomas, and words from the Mystics. I made a keyboard arrangement of the orchestral score. It can be used for rehearsal purposes as well as for performance.

The beginning of this mass patiently sets a meditative mood for the rest of the music.

The title "Tenero," transliterates in Italian as tender. Used in scores, it means tenderly, with tender emotion, delicately, softly. Tenero is written for piano. The "difficulty level" is moderate.

This is String Quartet No. 11, my latest work, composed in April 2023. Someone described it as an epic rhythmic journey through a story. There are many motifs with their developments and textures. It is sometimes playful, sometimes picturesque, and sometimes pensive, tense, or perhaps, humorous, tender, and passionate. It is a musical pallet of many moods following a stream of consciousness. But, mainly, I realize that music is a personal experience between the composer and the listener. Listeners here are welcome to share your thoughts about it if you like.

I always need a music project to work on. 🎶 If the climate here was more gentle, I would shift my attention to spring gardening, though -- for a while. So, I put a little guitar study (No. 32) on score exchange just after I started another string quartet (No. 11). The study was a quickly written composition made for the record of my quickly passing ideas so that I can move on to a different set of ideas. The string quartet, however, is a far more important work and I will work hard on it this spring. ...

Here is a photo that classmates.com gave me access to. It is my baby-faced self when I played in my high school orchestra. Gosh... that was 59 years ago! Am I still recognizable ... perhaps? 😁🧐😂

Thoughts As a Composer...
One big thing that I experience as a composer is letting a composition be finished. So often I don’t realize that I want something more in it until after I publish it and have all that printing done. Compositions can be an ongoing creation in my mind, given enough time inside the workings of my psyche.

One thing about being a serious musician is that it absorbs so much of the day that other things don't get the focus they need. Artists often are poor because they are artistic souls and it is a common struggle for them to be able to focus on strengthening their financial lives or attend to the other daily needs of life. There are exceptions to this with some people in the arts who are famous while living their lives in the demanding limelight. But I have studied the composers in history and I have found that they were usually very dependent on the wealthy around them who patronized the arts to sponsor them. And, it is interesting to note that many of the great composers did not have any experience with fame; their fame came after their deaths.

There is no way I could do my work and put it out there without the great observation and advice given in this post — that it is not enough to be inspired; action must follow this. I keep a log of my goals on a daily basis and what I want to accomplish for the year. I try my best to not waste my time, though I know the time to unwind and relax is important also. Practicing an instrument, in addition to composing is tricky. A serious instrumentalist is essentially married to her/his instrument in terms of time. Wanting to be an instrumentalist of more than one instrument -- which I have fallen into -- compounds this situation. It is probably common among some composers because they love the instruments they write for. And then there is life outside of all of that has to be attended to!

These are just some thoughts here that this post conjured up in me because of my predicament. Chuckle....

Squirrel and Doe Hangout

One day I noticed a squirrel and doe sharing space at the bird feeder, so I videoed it with my iPhone. The original video is 13 minutes long. A couple of weeks later, I decided to make a music video with it, so I went through my scores and quickly picked one from several years ago that I thought would go with the video. I always use my own compositions or performances for my music videos. The music is from my second symphony- No. 2, movement I, Andante. There are some cute moments between the squirrel and the doe.
