Inside Mountain Outlaw: OTO Rides Again
The OTO Ranch is the oldest dude ranch in Montana, and its fate hangs in the balance. Largely dormant for decades save for wildlife and the occasional day tripper, a recent pop-up dude ranch experiment was a window into what the Forest-Service operated historic site could be. Upon invite, Mountain Outlaw contributor Elisabeth Kwak-Hefferan attended a stay at the pop-up ranch followed by further reporting on the history—and potential future—of this iconic piece of Montana's past.
In this Inside Mountain Outlaw interview, Managing Editor Bella Butler talks with Kwak-Hefferan about her experience reporting and writing about the OTO, and what's at stake. The Language of Belay
Conrad Anker’s community is climbing.
“The beauty of when we get out climbing is that it’s changing the paradigm of how humans relate with other humans,” Anker said. “When climbing, that is when the mental basis is about a shared goal that is an intrinsic reward, and when you climb or when you’re outdoors, because you know you can lose your life and you have to trust your life to another person, that level of competition is taken away and then you support that other person.”
Presenting the The Language of Belay Mountain Outlaw documentary. Read the story at mtoutlaw.com.
Conrad Anker is known as one of the greatest climbers in the world. Mountain Outlaw spoke with Anker about his latest project a bit closer to home in this issue's Featured Outlaw. Keep an eye out for the story and accompanying documentary.

“Because though he went through this extraordinarily painful ordeal and lived through it and fought through it, people can relate to him even though they don’t have anything in common with him,” said Matt Crossman of Theodore Roosevelt, the subject of his feature story, Legacy & Land. “That’s central to the human existence.”

Mountain Outlaw: Saving Greater Yellowstone
As populations in southwest Montana surge and development interferes with migratory patterns of the native wildlife, elk are paying the price, becoming the undeserving victims in a growing number of vehicle collisions in the Gallatin Valley.
We dove into this topic in the summer 2021 issue of the magazine. In this video, environmental reporter Todd Wilkinson discusses the impacts of development on the wildlife in the Greater Yellowstone with local experts, highlighting problems that have only gained relevance in the nearly two years since filming.

With the Middle Fork of the Salmon River as his classroom, investigative journalist Scott Carney guided a group this summer on a journey of disconnection. By removing people from technology and the comforts of every day life, Carney took these intrepid explorers through a series of lectures and exercises to better understand how to use their own biology as a tool for building resilience.
Mountain Outlaw Managing Editor Bella Butler joined Carney on this Boundary Expeditions trip to learn a bit more about how the New York Times bestselling author uses story to bridge his audience from doubt to revelation. Look for Butler's profile on Carney in the upcoming winter edition of Mountain Outlaw, on stands in December, and stay tuned for more sneak peaks into the magazine.
