But but but … they said that they said that they said that they said that they said that they said that God said it, so it must be true right?

Feeling unworthy goes hand in hand with feeling separate from others; from life. If we’re defective how can we possibly belong? The more deficient we feel, the more separate and vulnerable we feel. Underneath our fear of being flawed is a more primal fear, that something is wrong with life, with us, or that something bad is going to happen.

We kid around here.

There’s just so much great, snarky material on the interwebs about religion.

Me thinks I’m a little too Maher for anyone’s taste sometimes.

This comes from FB friend Tom, a minister at a Methodist church in New England.

Tom and I see eye to eye on a lot of things. I steal from him a lot.

This one’s a keeper.

Interesting theory, Jack.

By your logic, my “faults” and “sins” in a previous life include faults like, say, having the almost insatiable urge to drown puppies in Coke Zero, and “sins” like drowning kittens in Coke Zero instead.

“… when I discovered Buddhism an’all, I suddenly felt that I had lived in a previous lifetime innumerable ages ago and now because of faults and sins in that lifetime I was being degraded to a more grievous domain of existence and my karma was to be born in America where nobody has any fun or believes in anything, especially freedom.”

~ Jack Kerouac

(Just kidding. Drowning kittens in Coke Zero isn’t a sin. Isopropyl alcohol, yes, but not Coke Zero.)

Friends sometimes ask, ‘Dont you get lonely, sitting by yourself to write for hours at a time?’

At first it seemed odd to hear myself answer No. Then I realized that I was not alone. I was in the book. I was with the characters. Which is to say, I was with my Self.

Not only do I not feel alone with my characters, they are more vivid and interesting to me than the people in my real life.

I don’t have children ( and I have emotions that splatter all over the map about that.) So I can only speak about the parent-child relationship from one angle. So I apologize for any inherent naïveté of this statement. I imagine there’s a host of similar observations from the other side.

I had dinner with my parents tonite. No big deal. Vietnamese restaurant on St. Paddy’s Day. We laughed. We bickered. We discussed a family reunion we’re hosting here on March.

A good chunk of us spend most of our childhoods and adolescence and teenage years trying to get away from our families.

I’m thinking if, in adulthood, you can still catch dinner with your parents/children and have a good time and you make each other laugh and all that, you are very fortunate indeed.

Signs you may very well be getting your sense of humor back, #4:

Work is the six floor of the Applied Sciences/School of Nursing building.

The sixth floor is accessible only by security key card in the elevators (which is honestly pretty slick to stroll into the elevator and when folks ask what floor I need, I casually scan the card for the 6th floor button)

After that, most rooms on the sixth floor are climate controlled with ventilation systems sucking the doors shut with a loud CHUNK. And most rooms are accessible only with a skeleton key.

One of these room is of interest. The room is in the back of a dark, dingy hallway with HVAC ducts and electrical systems snaking the ceiling. Inside the room are stacks and stacks of 45 lbs bags of food.

The room would be a perfect spot for a midday meditation. Only one glitch.

The room is not completely abandoned as there is expensive food for many types of animals and corncob bedding and other supplies one might need to go into this room to retrieve.

And the lights in the room are on a 30 second timer when unoccupied. I, for one, love the idea of meditating in total and complete darkness.

But the idea of one of my coworkers needing to retrieve a bag of food or other sundry, then unlocking and opening the door, then the lights switch on and Ta Daa! I’m smirking back at them had me giggling for a solid couple of minutes.
