It's scholarship season for the 2025-2026 school year!..because I've never been one to gatekeep.

The Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust (B.E.S.T.), in partnership with our 17 independent Member Schools, recruits and supports through the admissions process academically ambitious, African American students with financial need from the Baltimore area. Once students are enrolled, B.E.S.T. positions them for success through academic preparation, character and leadership development, and support programs.

“Y’all this way of thinking definitely doesn’t come with perfection. We all get frustrated, have past traumas, lose our cool sometimes…this post is about DOING THE WORK to ensure we are our best possible selves for our children. That looks different for everyone. However, if you’re purposefully being mean or letting your own traumas flow into your children, you do need to work on that because they don’t deserve that at all.”

• Stop belittling them
• Stop bullying them
• Stop hitting them
• Stop treating them as if they’re burdens
• Stop putting adult responsibilities on them

• Start respecting them
• Start listening to them
• Help guide them instead of scaring them into listening to you
• Give them affection
• Give them age appropriate responsibilities and be understanding when they need guidance in that too.

You’re literally an adult and you’re still learning, stop acting like these kids should just know. It’s your job to teach them, with love and compassion.

And when you make mistakes (because you will), just apologize and try again.
