Trump is fine, campaign says, after being whisked off stage following apparent gunfire at rally

By JILL COLVIN and JULIE CARR SMYTH
Associated Press

BUTLER, Pa. (AP) — Donald Trump's campaign said in a statement that he was "fine" after being whisked off the stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania after apparent gunshots rang through the crowd.

"President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act," spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement. "He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow."

The Secret Service said in a statement that "the former President is safe."

The former president and presumptive Republican nominee was showing off a chart of border crossing numbers during his last rally before the Republican National Convention opens Monday when bangs started ringing through the crowd. Trump could be seen reaching with his right hand toward his neck. There appeared to be blood on his face.

He quickly ducked behind the riser as agents from his protective detail rushed the stage and screams were heard in the crowd of several thousand people. The bangs continued as agents tended to him on stage.

The crowd cheered as he got back up and pumped his fist.

His motorcade has since left the venue. His condition was not immediately known.

Police began vacating the fairgrounds shortly after Trump left the stage in what local officers described as a crime scene.

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident, the White House said.

Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., posted a photo on X of Trump, his fist raised and his face bloody in front of an American flag, with the words: "He'll never stop fighting to Save America."

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Ohio Sen. JD Vance, the three men on Trump's shortlist for vice president, all quickly sent out statements expressing concern for the former president, with Rubio sharing an image taken as Trump was escorted off stage with his fist in the air and a streak of blood on his face along with the words "God protected President Trump."

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, said in a statement on X that he had been briefed on the situation and Pennsylvania state police were on hand at the rally site.

"Violence targeted at any political party or political leader is absolutely unacceptable. It has no place in Pennsylvania or the United States," he said.

The federal government’s decision to phase out the A-10 Warthog planes has scrapped the Maryland National Guard’s proposed low-fly training area over the Pennsylvania Wilds.

By Marcie Shellhammer

Plans have been scrapped for the low-flying training zone over the Pennsylvania Wilds, announced U.S. Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman on Friday, May 3, 2024.

"The Air Force and National Guard Bureau has rescinded their proposal to create a low-flying training zone Duke Military Operating Area (MOA), which would allow pilots to fly as low as 100 feet above ground level," the Democratic senators announced in the morning.

By the afternoon, a National Guard spokesperson released a brief comment, saying the federal government's decision to phase out the A-10 Warthog planes resulted in a lot of changes.

"Based on the Air Force's recent decision to phase out the A-10s of the 175th Wing of the Maryland Air National Guard at Warfield Air National Guard Base, the National Guard Bureau decided to terminate the Duke Low Military Operations Area proposal."

Prepare for severe weather

WestPenn Power reports: A winter storm is on its way. Our dedicated crews are gearing up for snow expected in northern and central Pennsylvania early Tuesday that will transition to rain, with heavy rain and gusty winds expected across our entire service area through Wednesday. Rest assured, we're on high alert and ready to tackle any challenges that may arise. Learn more about how we’re preparing at https://www.firstenergycorp.com/newsroom/news_articles/firstenergy-electric-companies-prepare-to-respond-to-outages-caused-by-incoming-winter-weather.html

WestPenn Power says to prepare for outages before they happen by having the following items on hand:
Fully charged mobile devices and car charger or battery pack.
Flashlight, portable radio and extra batteries.
Extra blankets or a sleeping bag for each person.
First-aid kit.
Emergency supply of bottled water and convenience foods that do not require cooking.
View more storm prep tips at https://www.firstenergycorp.com/outages_help/outage_help/be_prepared_for_anoutage.html

If you should lose power, manage through safely by following these tips:
Assume all downed or low-hanging power lines are energized and dangerous. Stay at least 30 feet away from the line and anything it might be touching. Report downed lines ASAP to 9-1-1.
If using a backup generator for emergency power, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use it safely.
Use a flashlight or battery-powered lantern for light. Use care when burning candles; open flames are a dangerous fire hazard.
