This position reports directly to the President of NEPM and is based in western Massachusetts. A hybrid work schedule is an option.

Essential Duties & Functions

Undertake data analyses and help interpret results in support of enterprise, daily and investigative stories by you and in collaboration with Newsday reporters and editors.

Essential Job Knowledge & Skills

* Candidate should be a spreadsheet master and comfortable analyzing datasets containing numerous tables with millions of rows. The candidate also should have experience with GIS analysis and using at least one programming language for data collection and cleaning.
* Work with digital alternative storytelling team and print designers to employ data visualization across all platforms.
* Experience covering breaking news on deadline is a plus.
* Demonstrated ability to break news, file quickly and accurately for all our platforms, meet tight deadlines, juggle more than one story at a time, cultivate sources, understand the importance of data-driven reporting and produce high-profile enterprise stories.
* A motivated individual who can bring a creative approach to covering the news.
* Comfortable and proficient using social media, smartphone photo and video and other media platforms to report and tell stories.
* Ability to write in an engaging manner is essential.
* Attention to detail is required.
* Ability and willingness to collaborate and build a rapport with others.

* Proficiency shooting iPhone photos and videos is a necessary skill.

Harvard Public Health, a magazine of impact journalism for public health , is seeking a creative, motivated, and versatile senior editor to join its team of journalists.

Harvard Public Health is an independent digital editorial voice published by Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. We publish stories and commentary on bold ideas for public health, with a focus on what works, what doesn’t, and why. We also publish a newsletter for a global audience of public health officials, activists, policy makers, researchers, clinicians, and more.

We are looking for an editor with experience editing opinion journalism and commentary and who is comfortable working with a variety of writers and voices. The best candidates will have a network of contributors with provocative and powerful things to say about public health advances. The senior editor will also be expected recruit scientists, policymakers, and others and work with them to shape compelling opinion essays that resonate with the diverse audiences that care about public health. The senior editor will also oversee our weekly newsletter. The ideal candidate will be well-organized, fluent in AP and/or Chicago style, deadline-oriented, collaborative, and ambitious.

The position will likely report to the magazine’s managing editor.

Position Description

Additional duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Develop compelling ideas for opinion pieces and occasional news features, in conjunction with the editor-in-chief and managing editor; identify and recruit writers; build relationships with researchers, officials, policymakers, and others with new ideas about public health from across the breadth of the field.
* Manage the workflow for opinion pieces and selected features from commissioning through publication, including editing and proofreading pieces, working with the creative team on art ideas, and crafting outstanding headlines both for print and for SEO.
* Work with the rest of the magazine team on producing and promoting stories across HSPH’s platforms and syndication efforts.
* Oversee the content of the Harvard Public Health Weekly newsletter and assist with the magazine’s separate LinkedIn newsletter as needed.
* Become conversant with our WordPress back end, to post and edit stories on harvardpublichealth.org.
* Stay abreast of major issues in public health and ongoing developments.
* Perform other duties as assigned

Journalismnext.com Editor, Harvest Public Media: Harvest Public Media is adding the position of Editor to help expand the public radio collaboration, which reports on agriculture and food systems, the environment and climate change, and rural issues throughout the Midwest and Great Plains.

Harvest Public Media is based at KCUR, the NPR affiliate in Kansas City, Missouri. Its partners are St. Louis Public Radio, also in Missouri; Nebraska Public Media in Lincoln, Nebraska; Iowa Public Radio in Des Moines, Iowa; KOSU in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Illinois Public Media in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois; and WNIJ in DeKalb, Illinois.

We seek an Editor who is passionate about diving deep into issues affecting how the world eats, the present and future of a central U.S. industry, how agriculture impacts our environment, climate change’s effect on agriculture, and the nuances of rural life.

We’re looking for someone who is eager to collaborate with talented reporters capable of producing top-notch journalism that sheds light on an important topic while telling an interesting story. Being an expert on food, farming, climate, and rural life is not required, but a willingness to learn is.

The Editor works with the Managing Editor to drive ambitious coverage across radio, digital, social media and other platforms, and should be comfortable working quickly on timely news stories as well as planning long-term reporting projects. The mandate is varied: One day you’ll assign an ag story on an invasive species, the next you’ll work on a story about broadband access in rural areas, and later that day you’ll edit a story about impacts of a global trade dispute.

The Harvest team is more than the sum of its parts, and this job requires the ability to work cooperatively with the Managing Editor, reporters, news directors, station managers and regional collaborators. The Editor will help grow reporters’ capacity and aspirations, and should possess a keen understanding of what makes public media journalism special but also have ambitions to help drive public media forward.

Characteristic duties

* Works with the Managing Editor to ensure the smooth production and delivery of content to partners from the Harvest Public Media team. This work includes digital stories, audio stories, and multimedia series.
* Works with the Managing Editor to generate, approve, assign and edit stories for the radio and web with a focus on food production and systems, environment, climate and rural life.
* Helps ensure an efficient approach to news gathering and reporting that produces both timely and in-depth coverage of distinction.
* Works with the Managing Editor to coordinate coverage among related partners at other public media stations and news outlets.

* Participates in assigned fund-raising and outreach activities, on air and off.

Anticipated hiring range

$56,864 - $72,000 per year commensurate on education, experience, and internal equity. This is a grant-funded, one-year position with likelihood of renewal.

Journalismnext.com Maynard 200 Fellowship - Applications due Feb 12: he Maynard Institute for Journalism Education is seeking applications from editors and managers for the 2024 Maynard 200 Fellowship.

Maynard 200 is the cornerstone program advancing the Maynard Institute’s mission to expand the pipeline in news media and dismantle structural racism in its newsrooms. Since 2018, the Institute has trained over 100 media leaders, storytellers, editors, managers and entrepreneurs through the fellowship. Maynard 200 is designed to provide participants with hands-on skills training, one-to-one mentorship and a diverse community network of peer support.

In 2024, the program returns with two weeks of in-person training rounds — specifically re-designed to support the success of newsroom editors and managers. Hosted by the Bob Schieffer College of Communication at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas, the program will convene in March and July.

Our curriculum addresses the challenges and tensions that editors and managers struggle with daily in the newsroom, especially those who have recently transitioned to leadership roles. The program will also provide nuanced frameworks and cultural competency for fellows seeking guidance in covering the ongoing war and humanitarian crises in the Middle East; as well as political coverage for the 2024 U.S. presidential elections.

In-person Training Dates & Location:

Week 1: March 11- 15, 2024
Week 2: July 15 - 19, 2024

University Host: Bob Schieffer College of Communication at TCU, Fort Worth, Texas

As a Maynard 200 fellow, you’ll receive two weeks of tuition-free trainings, plus a full year of one-on-one mentorship. The Maynard Institute will provide you with lodging at Hyatt Place Fort Worth/TCU for both training weeks. In addition, airfare expenses will be covered for the second week of training in July, thanks to the support of our generous funders.

Requirements

Applicants are required to have 1-5 years of experience in a manager and/or editor role. This program welcomes new editors, including assigning editors both print and online; as well as assignment editors and executive producers in broadcast who supervise either in-house reporters, writers, and producers or freelancers or both. It is also geared for mid-level managers who may or may not have direct reports, but hold strategic leadership or communications roles in their newsrooms or media organizations.

Maynard 200 fellows are required to attend both weeks of training sessions, as well as fulfill all program components, in order to graduate from the program.

Applicants from outside the United States must be affiliated with a U.S.- based outlet.
