"The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey draws its 2024 season to a close with an imaginative, trippy retelling of Charles Dickens’ familiar Yuletide work, A Christmas Carol. As adapted by Neil Bartlett, this Christmas Carol utilizes a cast of eight to portray all the characters in the beloved story — along with clocks, weather, and other things one normally does not see actors embody.

The story is by now familiar to everyone. Miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, a petty tyrant with no regard for the Christmas season, is visited by the ghost of his late business partner Jacob Marley. Marley warns him of his likely punishment in the afterlife and prophecies visits by three other spirits."

📚 Say goodbye to book bans in the Garden State. On Dec. 9, Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law a bill that’ll prohibit New Jersey public schools and libraries from instituting book bans.

"Assembly Bill 3446, also known as the Freedom to Read Act, declares that the “freedom to read is a human right” and prohibits public education school boards and libraries from removing books from their spaces on the basis of “the origin, background, or views of the library material or those contributing to its creation,” per the law’s text. Additionally, librarians would have civil protections against people requesting a book be banned under their auspices. The act also establishes criminal penalties if a librarian goes through with removing a book if it was on the basis of the aforementioned criteria."

🏢 Garden State Equality acquires new statewide headquarters in Asbury Park!

“In a significant milestone marking its 20th anniversary, Garden State Equality (GSE), New Jersey’s leading LGBTQ advocacy, education, and wellness organization, has opened a new statewide headquarters. The organization purchased a 9,000-square-foot historic building in Asbury Park, a city known for its strong LGBTQ roots. This acquisition signals a new chapter for Garden State Equality in its 20th year.
The new headquarters will serve as a hub for the organization’s numerous youth programs, community services, and other statewide initiatives. GSE said it will help in the mission to create safe and inclusive schools throughout New Jersey. The historic century-old Asbury Park and Ocean Grove Bank building at 308 Main St. was until late last year a Santander Bank office. The building will retain some of its unique historic charm, but will also undergo some renovations to support GSE’s needs."

🧳 House Speaker Mike Johnson bans trans women from using women’s restrooms in the Capitol.

“U.S. Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, a Democrat from Delaware and the first out transgender woman elected to Congress, will not be able to use women’s restrooms, changing rooms, or locker rooms in the Capitol because of a ban implemented by Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson said Wednesday he is banning people who are transgender from accessing bathrooms on the House side of the Capitol complex that correspond to their gender identity, according to published reports."

🧳 Former superintendent sues Manchester Schools amid allegations of anti-LGBTQ bias.

“ The Manchester Township School District in Ocean County is facing mounting legal challenges, including a lawsuit filed by former superintendent John Berenato. Berenato alleges he was wrongfully terminated due to his identity as a gay man.
Berenato claims the Manchester Board of Education orchestrated a targeted campaign to remove him due to his sexual orientation. The controversial removal, allegedly driven by discriminatory attitudes and pressure from certain community members, has led to an outcry across the state. This lawsuit is just one of three pending cases accusing the district of violating New Jersey’s anti-discrimination laws."

👩‍⚖️ More than 10 LGBTQ related cases will be on the Supreme Court docket in the coming year.

"The U.S. Supreme Court opened its 2024-25 session Oct. 7 with at least 10 LGBTQ-related petitions before it. Seven of those petitions involve transgender issues: Four ask whether states can limit a minor’s access to treatment for gender dysphoria, and three ask whether states can ban transgender females from participating in female sports competitions.

Of those 10 LGBTQ-related cases, the court has agreed to hear two cases and refused to hear two others this session. Six others await disposition."

Anti-LGBTQ hate crimes continue to spike says HRC data from latest FBI report.

“Attacks based on gender identity are up 16% from last year. Attacks based on sexual orientation are up 23% and race and ethnicity-based hate crimes are still the largest category. But more than 1 in 5 hate crimes are motivated by anti-LGBTQ bias says the Human Rights Campaign after looking over the latest FBI report on hate crimes."
