There’s a scene in one of the early episodes of The Rings of Power that has captured my imagination this morning…

It’s the scene where Elrond visits Durin for the first time.

Elrond is an elf. He is essentially immortal. Durin is a dwarf who lives a more traditional mortal life.

When Elrond arrives in the great dwarf kingdom of Khazad-dúm, Durin is unquestionably angry with him. Elrond cannot decipher why.

Later in the episode we discover that Durin has married, lived a full life, had children, and is hurt because Elrond - who he considered to be his closest friend - has missed it all. It has been decades since they’d seen each other. And this has broken Durin’s heart.

Elrond seems completely oblivious to this. Why?

Time for both is experienced differently.

For Durin, this has been an extensive period where so much has happened. And his closest friend has been missing for all of it.

For Elrond, it’s seemed but a few days. He is immortal and the passage of a few decades is nothing.

He is not slow in the way some people understand it. Instead, he is patient with you. He doesn’t want anyone to be destroyed. Instead, he wants all people to turn away from their sins.”
