METEROR SHOWER PEAK VIEWING THIS WEEKEND

August 11th - August 13th get out in the open to view the annual Perseids Meteor Shower, the most beloved meteor shower of the year for the Northern Hemisphere.

The annual Perseids meteor shower is the result of Earth passing through debris left behind by a comet, which you should expect to see up to 40 meteors per hour.

The best spots to view the Perseids in the Bay Area include Strawberry Hill in Golden Gate Park, Lands End in San Francisco, Mt. Hamilton in San Jose, and the Chabot Space Center in Oakland, which has free telescope stargazing on most Fridays and Saturdays.

But you will be fine anywhere away from city lights. Make plans to stay up late or wake up early to see the incredible Perseids meteor shower of 2024.

I saw one as soon as I peeked outside around 2 a.m. Then went back to bed.

Local Wrestler Amit Elor Closes in on Medal, Trounces No. 1 Seed.

College Park alumni, And DVC student, Amit Elor advanced to the women’s freestyle semifinals with two victories at 68 kg during the opening session of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 wrestling competition at the Champ-de-Mars Arena today, Monday Aug 5.
She is competing in her first Olympic Games, Elor was unseeded and drew the No. 1 seed in the first round. She opened with an impressive 10-2 decision over 2023 World champion Buse Cavusoglu Tosun of Turkey.
In the quarterfinals, Elor dominated Wiktoria Choluj of Poland, 8-0.
Elor will face unheralded Sol Gum Pak of North Korea in the semifinals. Elor came into the Olympics with a pair of Senior World gold medals at 72 kg. Her 2022 World title made her the youngest U.S. Senior World champion in any style or gender. She has won eight UWW World titles in her career, including three at the U20 level, two at the U23 level and one at the U17 level.
She is a beast!

UPDATE: Her next match: She's going for the Gold. She won her semi-final match 10-0 against N. Korea in under two minutes.

Jake Larson is now 101 years old WWII Vet. He help plan and fought on Omaha Beach. He's the last survivor member of his regiment. HIs book "The Luckiest Man in the World."

CONCRD HAS CLOSED OPEN SPACE July 2-3 DUE TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER

Contra Costa County is under an excessive heat warning as temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees this week, creating dangerous conditions. At the recommendation of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (ConFire), the City of Concord has closed its open space areas including Lime Ridge Open Space and the open space trails within Newhall Community Park from Tuesday, July 2 through the evening of Wednesday, July 3.

In coordination with ConFire, City staff will reevaluate the conditions mid-week and determine whether to extend the closures.

In addition to the health dangers that accompany extreme heat, the risk of fire danger is very high. Closure of the open spaces during this time will protect the public and firefighters and preserve firefighting resources.

CONCORD OPENS COOLING CENTER

Concord, CA (July 1, 2024) – Due to anticipated high temperatures over the next several days, the City of Concord will open the Concord Senior Center as a cooling center, where air conditioning and comfortable seating are available. Located at 2727 Parkside Circle, the facility will be open as a cooling center on the following days:
Tuesday, July 2, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
Wednesday, July 3, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
Thursday, July 4, 1 p.m.-7 p.m.
Friday, July 5, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
Saturday, July 6, 1 p.m.-7 p.m.

People who visit the cooling centers should bring their own snacks, water, and activities. Pets are permitted if they are on-leash and are not aggressive or loud. Owners are responsible for feeding, watering, and taking their pet outside to relieve itself and cleaning up after them.
Other Places to Cool Down
The Meadow Homes Spray Park, 1351 Detroit Ave., is open daily through the summer from noon to 6 p.m.
Concord Community Pool, 3501 Cowell Rd., will be open for recreational swimming 1-4 p.m. on weekdays, and 12:30-5 p.m. on weekends and on the July 4 holiday.
Residents can also beat the heat in Concord at Sunvalley Shopping Center, Brenden Theatre, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, and any of the air-conditioned restaurants or retail stores in the area.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated. Even young and healthy individuals can succumb to heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather. For more information, visit

Environmental displays will include Native Birds, Nor Cal Bats, Save the Snakes, Lindsey Wildlife and a huge mobile fish aquarium from East Bay Regional Park. This is a fabulous event, thanks to all the Martinez beavers.
