On Sunday 03-01-2025 at 2343 hours, Sherman Dispatch received a call in reference to suspicious activity in the 2100-block North Shannon Drive. The caller advised they overheard an individual make a comment about stabbing his ex-girlfriend’s dog. Officers arrived on scene to investigate.
Officers spoke with some individuals at the property and informed them about the nature of the call. The individuals advised they were unaware of any injured dogs. One of the individuals (23-year-old Michael Ruiz) stated he was moving property out of the house after having problems with his ex-girlfriend. He claimed his ex-girlfriend’s dogs were inside the residence and reaffirmed they were not injured. Officers walked with Ruiz to the front door of the residence, where fresh blood was observed inside the home. Officers ultimately made entry into the residence to check immediate welfare of any persons or animals. Officers located two injured dogs, one inside the home and one outside. Both dogs had fresh, major lacerations to their sides. Officers immediately summoned the assistance of Sherman Animal Services. Both dogs were transported to an emergency veterinary hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, neither of the two dogs survived.
Officers detained Ruiz. Upon detaining him, officers observed fresh blood on his body and his clothing. Ruiz had no signs of visible injury. Officers continued their investigation on-scene, which allowed them to obtain additional evidence to support Ruiz stabbing the two dogs.
Ruiz was arrested on two counts of Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals: Kill/Poison/SBI (both felonies). He was transported to the Grayson County Jail.
