Weekend Doc Reco from HDF! 🎥

This weekend, immerse yourself in documentaries that explore the fight for justice and the strength of the human spirit:

1. 5B - Experience the touching and heroic efforts of the nurses and caregivers who ran the first-ever AIDS ward in San Francisco in the 1980s. Their compassion and bravery shine through in this emotional tribute to those who cared for the most vulnerable during the height of the AIDS crisis.
2. At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal - This powerful film exposes the systemic abuse within USA Gymnastics, telling the harrowing stories of survivors and their fight for justice. A must-watch for those interested in the intersection of sports, power, and resilience.
3. Bully. Coward. Victim. The Story of Roy Cohn - Directed by Ivy Meeropol, this documentary offers a uniquely personal and deeply interrogative look at one of the most ruinous figures of the 20th century. Meeropol, whose grandparents Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed under Cohn’s prosecution, seeks to unravel the true character behind a man who became an icon of the political right in a deeply troubled America.

These films offer compelling insights into the struggles and triumphs of individuals facing immense challenges. Perfect for a thought-provoking weekend!

🌿 In 2021, we had the privilege of screening The Gardener, a breathtaking documentary by Sébastien Chabot, which takes us into the enchanting world of Le Quatre Vents. In one of his interviews, Sébastien shared his first experience with the garden:

“I first visited in 2007 with my partner, just for a regular visit. The visit takes three hours, and I was just blown away by the beauty, the perfection of the place, and I wondered why it is so unknown to the general public. It should be better known, so I decided to make the film.”

One part of the garden that struck Sébastien the most was the Asiatic garden: “You only really discover that after an hour and a half or two hours in the garden, but it’s so surreal. It’s so perfect and incredibly made with two Japanese pavilions built in the same way that the samurai would have made them in the 16th century, without any nails or anything. This specific garden took nine years to create. There’s a big cascade with primulas and it’s a very meditative place. It’s much nicer than what you see in a conventional botanical garden.”

🌸 The Gardener is more than a film; it’s an invitation to experience the wonder and tranquility of one of the world’s most exquisite gardens.

✨ Director Sabine Krayenbühl & Zeva Oelbaum had an insightful conversation with Cynthia Lopez after the screening of Impact Award winner “Obsessed With Light” at the 2023 Hamptons Doc Fest. 🎥

Sabine shared, “I’m originally from Switzerland and came to New York to study film because I was enthralled by movies… My career started as an editor until more recently, and now I’m co-directing with Zeva.”

Zeva added, “I came to film from a career as a still photographer. Images are my passion, and telling a story through them is what drives me.”

Together, they revealed how Loïe Fuller’s legacy influenced countless artists, from William Kentridge to Taylor Swift. 🌟 Their film dives deep into Fuller’s innovative spirit, blending artistic creation with scientific innovation.

🌿 From the thrill of discovering original audio tapes of Fuller’s dancers to navigating the challenges of the pandemic, this film is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion.

🎬 Catch Leslie Shampaine in conversation with Roger Sherman after the screening of CALL ME DANCER at the 2023 Hamptons Doc Fest, where she was honored with the Video Art & Inspiration Award.

🎥 From Ballet to Film: A Journey of Passion and Perseverance

In a recent conversation, Leslie shared her incredible journey from being a ballet dancer to becoming a documentary filmmaker. After retiring from ballet in her 30s, she transitioned into film, working behind the scenes for over 25 years. Her passion for dance and storytelling finally came together when Yehuda, a renowned dance teacher, asked her to tell his story. The film took five years to complete, with a dedicated team and even some footage captured on her cell phone!

✨ “As a dancer, he trusted me to tell their story, and I think that’s what made the film so special.”

📅 The film is showing at Quad Cinema in NYC from August 15-21.

Director Sam Shahid in Conversation with Bruce Weber at HDF 2023 🎬✨

After the screening of "HIDDEN MASTER: THE LEGACY OF GEORGE PLATT LYNES" at the 2023 Hamptons Doc Fest, Director Sam Shahid and legendary photographer Bruce Weber sat down for an insightful conversation. 🌟

Quote from the discussion:

"I want to read to you something that was written on the wall of the museum: 'The Lumière brothers were a little like children. What could be more genuine than the first images? Those are images you can trust—no manipulation, no contamination, just the wonder of being able to create them.' That's a bit of what it's like to recapture the sense of wonder. I'd like us to try and remember those first moments."
