Our Emergent Story

The idea of showcasing the journeys and transformative stories of Deaf community of color members through our creative talk platform was influenced by the existing talk platforms such as TEDx Talk, Red Table Talk, etc. However these current talk platforms are based on audiocentric/or phonocentric ideologies which can be dismissive of critical issues affecting Deaf communities of color. We believe that representational processes of dismantling the dominant narratives do matter. We are taking this creative opportunity into our hands to show how the transformative stories can be transmitted through Deaf centric lens as well through the lens of Deaf Black Indigenous People of Color (DBIPOC*)

*denotation is an equitable acknowledgment of the spectrum of intersectional experience(s) of Deaf community of color members including who identify as Deaf, deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, etc .

Ubunityᵘ.tv emerged from the abstract combination of unity, community and Ubuntu. Ubuntu is an ancient African philosophical word demonstrating the meaning of “humxn/human empathy to others” and of “I am what I am because of who we all are”. Ubuntu, in synergy with solidarity and community, embodies the humble meaning of ‘sharity’ and mindfulness in the process of rebuilding and deepening humxn/human connection. The ‘u’ within Ubunityᵘ.tv is a reflection of you being the embodiment of ubunity itself. You are Ubunity. We are Ubunity. Universe is Ubunity.

We saw how the dominant narratives and the dominant knowledge systems are not complete without the third space narratives (Indigenous narratives, Disability Justice narratives, Deaf centric narratives, etc.) because they have not fully embrace various integral narratives or intersectional knowledge to strengthen the contexts of their narratives.
