If you're looking for a cool activity on a hot day for kids (besides water-related pursuits) don't forget your local library! We recently took our preschool granddaughter to the pleasantly cool Kirkland Town Library and she had hours of fun perusing books and playing with the kid-friendly activity stations.

Looking for an interesting place to hike? Check out the Rome Sand Plains, a true inland pine barren with sand dunes, peat bogs, and other interesting wetland habitats. We visited this unique area on the MVL TV show in 2008. We learned about the effort to re-establish blue lupine, a plant vital to the "at risk" species of butterfly, the frosted elfin butterfly. Local researcher Ernest H. Williams has written about the Sand Plains several times (August 2018 NYS Conservationist, page 10:https://extapps.dec.ny.gov/docs/administration_pdf/0818consmag4web.pdf and https://www.lepsoc.org/sites/all/themes/nevia/lepsoc/Conservation%20Matters%20-%20Lupines%20&%20Butterflies.pdf) Williams sometimes gives tours in the spring when the lupine is in bloom.
