Dr. Kimberly Douglass joins this episode (originally recorded on The Neurodivergent Nurse Podcast) to discuss what is behind the difficulties of receiving a diagnosis of ADHD for Black Americans. She discusses how symptoms in Black children are ignored as we look at issues such as the school to prison pipleline, the racial and ethnic disparities across the entire healthcare spectrum, implicit bias with diagnosing Black Americans, community stigma and more. Dr. Douglass has formed an encouraging community with her presence on TikTok (drkimberlydouglass) where she shares her knowledge of all things Neurodivergence ranging from Autism to needs of executive functioning to the reminders we all need to hear that we are whole today and deserving of quality of life.

Almost 12hrs in I wake up cold with chills and a mild headache as well as my skin feeling really sensitive with a fever of 101.5 orally. Stay posted.

When people ask how I'm doing

When people ask how I'm doing I want to say, "My depression is an angry Deity, a jealous god, a thirsty shadow that rings my joy like a dish rag and makes juice out of my smile. But I would rather not ruin someone's day with my tragic honesty so instead I laugh and say, 'I'm doing alright.'" This pandemic isn't fun for those of us who work in healthcare. We see the pain, the suffering, the death. Then when we leave with our hearts broken and tears in our eyes we get to hear the public tell us how bad it is not. We get to read the conspiracy theories as we are still mourning the life lost a couple hours prior. We get to have our family and friends mock our strict precautions that we are begging our country to take so they don't suffer like the man we started the morphine drip on today as his family watched through video chat. We experience condescending chatter as we don't respond energetically enough to those who minimize the gravity of this Virus. I'm scared, I'm sad, and I'm exhausted. Tomorrow I will put on my scrubs as I go to work and potentially lose my life to save yours. #covid19 #coronavirus #pandemic #nurse #doctor #medical #wearamask #sociallydistance #respectthevirus #frontline
