Hey Tipp City!

The next high school basketball season marks 40 years for me covering and promoting the sport of women’s basketball, which started right here in Tipp City and branched out across the country.
I am super excited to reflect back on the last four decades with some cool stories, some great memories and just putting my thoughts out there starting with the January 10 edition of the Gazette, as over the next few months I will be taking a weekly walk through my 40 years. It will be similar to what DL Stewart and Dale Huffman with the DDN did for several years, writing columns about personal stories.
It all started right here in Tipp City, and now having been back living in this community again for the last 20+ years it’s an honor to bring the Tipp readers along for a weekly journey. I truly enjoy covering Tipp sports for the Gazette and meeting so many of you amazing athletes and
parents. Make sure you pick up your copy or subscribe for the only consistent Tipp sports coverage you can find! And feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any cool sports story ideas! - Sports Editor Jim Dabbelt

Bowling squad suffers first loss of young season

“We have done better than we did today, but they really didn’t do that bad today,” said Tipp coach Jim Ridgeway. “A lot of it is we have a very young team, and it is the first time they had to try to come from behind and they just don’t have the experience yet to know how to do that.”

Tipp girls basketball wins with a 46-43 victory over Tecumseh!🏀🙌🙌🙌

“We talked about the first two games and that we needed to get that first win, so this was a really big deal to us to clinch this one,” Tipp coach Christina Pentaudi said. “We knew it was going to be a battle; it always is between Tecumseh and Tipp.”

105 turkey breasts. 80 whole turkeys. 480 pounds of green beans. 3,180 candy canes. That’s just a fraction of the food packaged up last week by volunteers from Needy Basket, Tipp City’s hometown food pantry. The volunteers’ goal? Gather everything needed for a full Christmas dinner — plus breakfast and snacks — into one box. Then prepare to hand them out to 260 families from across Miami County.

Hundreds of people flocked to Tipp City to kick-start the holiday season on Saturday for the annual Tippecanoe Christmas in the Village. This event has been going on for decades and this year’s theme was 100 + Years of Homes in honor of the Tipp City Library’s 100th anniversary. People who attended were able to get holiday decorating ideas while touring nine homes on the Christmas tour. Each home was decorated for Christmas and included festive tabletops decorated by professional designers.

Whoops forgot to post the article!!

New coach ready for bowling success, by Jim Dabbelt - Coming off of a season that saw the Tippecanoe boys bowling team finish winless in the Miami Valley League, first-year head coach Jim Ridgeway is ready for what he hopes is a turnaround season for the Red Devils this winter as they have begun their 2023-24 season.
“I am very encouraged after struggling the last couple of years,” Ridgeway said. “I have been here as JV coach and they are coming along nicely.”
“I am excited about Scott Lohnes and Brendan Blacketer who are seniors who have been consistently 170 or better bowlers and I am hoping they improve on that this season. The exciting part is that I have gotten two returning sophomores who have improved from last year on the varsity and two freshman; Hunter Herzog who is a 180-190 bowler as a freshman and Lukas Heirbrink who literally just started bowling a couple of months ago and he is putting up 140-150s so I am hoping with some encouragement and some growth he will turn into a solid bowler this year and the year after.”
On the girls side, Ridgeway is hoping his mostly junior squad is able to compete at a high level this season.
“I have one senior, Amber Weldon who bowled for the first time last year and she is a technically sound bowler who is still learning how to score,” Ridgeway said. “I also have a bunch of really good juniors with the team captains Marissa Hollon and Jocelyn Gold and they have come along since their freshman year, and have taken on a really good leadership role for us.”
Ridgeway is
“With the boys we are expecting to qualify as a team for districts,” he said. “We haven’t done that since 2018 or 19, and for the girls, I would love to see two or three of them qualify as individuals. The girls' side is very competitive in our district. If we qualify as a team that would be a very good stretch goal, but I think we have three of them who would qualify.”
Blacketer is the team captain for the boys squad and is a dedicated bowler.
“Since he was a freshman, he has always been dedicated to work and improve with tons of questions,” Ridgeway said “When a kid shows that kind of interest, you can’t help but to have high hopes that he does well.” Others to watch are sophomores Hayden Sherwood and Connor DeMange and they were on and off varsity last year, but over the summer they have worked really hard and have been putting up varsity numbers.”
For the girls team, Ridgeway also praised the work of Morgan Wolbers who is one of the more improved bowlers this season.
“She was putting up 70-80s and toward the end of the season she was putting up 140-150s,” Ridgeway said. “I am hoping this is a turnaround year for her and she is someone to watch as a senior.”

Swim teams looking for MVL titles this winter, by Jim Dabbelt - Entering his tenth season at the helm of the Tippecanoe swim team, Karl Stanbery is more than ready to continue the success that he has seen from his swimmers when the Red Devils hit the pool this winter. While Tipp doesn’t have a lot of big numbers this season on the team, he feels that another big season is expected from the talent he has coming back this year.

“We are a bit smaller this year but I think we will be really exciting,” Stanbery said. “We have some good experience coming back from state last year but we graduated 11 kids including ten girls with the majority of them were on state relays.” Read more on the Tippecanoe Gazette website...

SpaceX’s Starship reaches space before exploding - The spacecraft is made up of two parts: a Super Heavy booster and a smaller Starship rocket sitting atop the booster. Upon launch, the booster’s 33 engines fired and Starship rose from the pad, sending up a massive cloud of smoke and steam as thousands of spectators watched from a safe distance.

After a morning of propellant loading and final checks, the unmanned rocket’s engines ignited and the massive 11 million-pound rocket powered into the sky…

Girls Basketball Preview: Defense will be the key to success this winter by Jim Dabbelt -

It will be a different look Tippecanoe girls basketball team who takes the court starting Monday, November 27, in their season opener against Beavercreek. Four of the top six scorers from last year have graduated, and a fifth player is out for the season due to injury. That will leave a lot of question marks about who will step up for the Red Devils this season.
