Happy Flag Day! A resolution adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, declared that the flag of the United States of America will have 13 stripes of alternate red and white, with a union of 13 stars of white in a blue field. The white signifies purity and innocence; the red is for hardiness and valor; and blue stands for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. More stars were added when new states became part of the union. Our flag is flown at homes, government buildings, patriotic events, and many parades. Although Flag Day is not a federal holiday, it is a day to honor the meaning of our flag.
