George Floyd, police reform, what comes next: A conversation with The SJ-R
On March 25, 2020, George Floyd was killed while being taken into police custody. That same night, video of his murder — showing then-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck and back for 9 minutes and 29 seconds until he stopped breathing — surfaced. The footage ignited a nationwide movement calling for police reform and speaking out against racism.
In the days following Floyd’s death, a diverse group of people across Springfield began taking to the streets to join the Black community in protests calling for change.
Over the last year, police, lawmakers and other members of the local community have come together to have more conversations about race relations, racism and policing.
