MVU: One thing that really struck me was how vivid and atmospheric this story is. Right from the very first page, I felt like I was literally in this place with the youngest brother, with every sense heightened. It just feels rich. Is the atmosphere and setting something you really focus on while writing? And when does that part happen—do you hit most of those notes in the first draft as the story plays out in your mind, or do you get the meat and bones of the story down first and then begin fine-tuning the scenes for atmosphere and mood and verisimilitude?

RS: That’s very sweet of you! For me, the atmosphere and general tone of the story are usually one of the only things I have when I sit down to write. Working in tandem with the image of the sister in the first scene, I really wanted to get across this feeling of being hunted and constantly on edge. There’s a vibe or feeling I’m trying to get out of my brain and onto the page, and the characters and their problems spring up accordingly. Unfortunately, this usually means my first drafts are rather gelatinous; no plot, all vibes.

New short fiction today by Rachael Severino: "Birds of a Feather"

She is sitting in the window when I find her. My entry into her apartments teeters entirely on this precarious pair of facts; one, I am small; and two, I am armed with Mother’s message. My older brothers may wander down this hall, if they are feeling brave, but they never touch the door, preferring instead to press so far against the opposite wall that their shoulders bump into the gilded picture frames, crooking the faces of our ancestors, giving their scowls purpose, a reason. My shoulders never bump anything. Older brothers are complicated in a fundamental way that I am not; the baby brother, youngest of the youngest. It is easy to love the elder sister, the only sister. It is not my responsibility to protect, nor provide. Often, I feel frozen in time. Always the newborn, wrapped in a blanket or smock, held in the arms of a sister, or a mother.

New interview today by Bradley Powers: "Interview with Artist Asya Yordanova"

BRADLEY POWERS: I’m fascinated with your recent portraits. They have similarities to nineteenth century portrait paintings, but have a horror twist. These individuals are clearly struggling against something, but what it is, the viewer can only imagine. Do these pieces have a particular story behind them? What advice would you give to an artist hoping to improve their visual storytelling abilities?

ASYA YORDANOVA: The story behind these portraits is my own struggle with self-censorship. I came to the realization that I was censoring my work, so to say. Often I caught myself having an idea, and then thinking “no, that’s too weird, or too gross, or too dark.” And then I’d go and do a more mellow version, or even scrap it altogether. This self-sabotage was really frustrating, and the horror artwork I’ve done lately marks my attempts to break away from that bad habit.

New short fiction today by Rachel Bolton: "And She Had Been So Reasonable"

Pay attention. I’m going to share a story. I heard it first, and you will hear it second. Here in this telling, you get to make some of the choices.

There is a woman, and she is a man’s wife. Please give her name. Call her whatever you’d like. Grace. Ximina. Shira. Bian. Zoe. Aaliyah. Name her after your grandmother, a good friend, or someone you’ve forgotten and want to remember. You can even give her your own name. I won’t tell. Keep her name a secret or share it with everyone you know.

Like her name, you get to decide what she looks like. There is no one thing that makes a woman. Don’t believe people who tell you otherwise. The only features the Woman must have for this story are to be able-bodied and financially secure enough to live in a house. All her other attributes are up to you. Fat. Thin. In-between. She can be of any race. Yes, she is married to a man, but she may not be straight. The Woman could be bisexual. Ace. A closeted lesbian, or perhaps transgender. She is young. She is old. She is the same age as you. Do write her a backstory.

New editorial today by Lesley Conner: "Musings from Maryland"

Welcome to Apex Magazine issue 147.

We’re closing out 2024 with an absolutely brutal issue. Manipulation, coercion, emotional and physical abuse, this issue has it all—including the end of the world. Like issue 146, this issue delves into really complex, messy interpersonal rela- tionships. Let’s dive right in!

New review today by Leah Ning: "Book Review: John Wiswell's Someone You Can Build a Nest In"

I’ve been excited to read Someone You Can Build a Nest In since I knew John Wiswell was writing a book. I’m absolutely charmed by his writing, some of my favorite shorts of his being “D.I.Y.”, “For Lack of a Bed”, and, of course, “House on Haunted Hill.” So being delighted by Someone You Can Build a Nest In came as zero surprise to me.

Wiswell’s an absolute master of mixing kind, gentle humor with heavier topics, and this book was no exception. Shesheshen’s observations on the human condition struck me as wise and hilarious in equal measures. Usually I’m a hard sell on written humor, but this fabulous monster and her love had me laughing on more occasions than I could count. Shesheshen’s nature, both internal and external, were excellently done as well, easy to follow while rarely if ever falling into familiar tropes I often find in non-human points-of-view.
