By Chardonnay Beaver - Mount Zion Baptist Church has been the spiritual and cultural fabric that knits my family’s history to Seattle, spanning back six generations.
On July 20th, I had the opportunity to honor this legacy by hosting my very first book signing and documentary screening at this historic church. The event was a significant milestone for me, made possible through the unwavering support and collaboration of Mount Zion Baptist Church’s History & Archive Ministry.
The atmosphere was filled with joy and connection. It was heartwarming to see everyone smiling, reconnecting with familiar faces, and sharing in this celebration of my work.
My book, Words of Wisdom: A Compilation of Life Principles, Inspired by Truth & Guided by Purpose Vol. 1, published in May, has already begun inspiring lives, just as I hoped it would. As a first-time author, it’s incredibly rewarding to learn how my words resonate with others.
Guests enjoyed delicious refreshments from Ezell’s Famous Chicken and Catfish Corner, adding a special touch to the evening.
The highlight of the event was the screening of my first documentary, Fulfill the Promise: The Rise. The Fall. The Promise. Directed by Moët Beaver and filmed by Masai Matthews, the 90-minute documentary captivated viewers with the story of Seattle's Central District and the enduring legacy of Reverend Dr. Samuel Berry McKinney’s activism in founding the Seattle Opportunities Industrialization Center. Rev. McKinney’s vision lives on today through the McKinney Center for Community & Economic Development.
This event was a celebration of history, community, and the ongoing journey to inspire others. I'm deeply grateful to everyone who attended and served. I look forward to many more screenings and opportunities to share my work.
Remember to always shine bright, take up space, and pursue God’s purpose for your life.
Blessings + gratitude, Chardonnay D. Beaver

Umoja Fest, a yearly celebration deeply rooted in Seattle's Central District, marked its 70th anniversary this year with a powerful display of Black culture, creativity, and unwavering community spirit. Held at the historic Judkins Park, the festival was more than just a weekend of festivities; it was a living testament to the enduring legacy of Black excellence in the city.
For many attendees, Umoja Fest felt like a homecoming. Longtime participant David Jackson described it as "a staple in the community," while Anthony Tibbs emphasized the importance of "bringing a lot of the black folks back to the community." This sense of belonging and shared experience was palpable throughout the weekend, as friends and families reconnected, danced, and celebrated together.
The festival served as a dynamic platform for Black-owned businesses, artists, and organizations to showcase their talents and connect with a supportive audience. Umoja Fest Host Trae Holiday captured the essence of the festival, stating, "Umoja Fest is a celebration of our roots, our resilience, and the boundless spirit of our people." Her words resonated with attendees, reflecting the deep sense of pride and unity that permeated the atmosphere.
Hip-hop legend Doug E. Fresh, whose performance resonated across the multi-generational crowd, summed up the essence of Umoja Fest.
Umoja Fest 2024 was a powerful reminder of the strength and beauty that emerges when a community comes together to honor its shared heritage, uplift one another, and create a space for healing and unbridled joy. It was a testament to the resilience of Seattle's Black community, the transformative power of unity, and the enduring legacy of Black excellence that continues to shape the city's cultural landscape.
