16/08/2024

August is National Black Business Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the invaluable contributions of Black-owned businesses across the United States. This annual observance, established in 2004, serves as a reminder of the resilience, innovation, and economic impact of Black entrepreneurs.

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are fortunate to have a vibrant and diverse community of Black-owned businesses that enrich our region in countless ways. From restaurants and retail stores to professional services and tech startups, these businesses are integral to the fabric of our local economy.

Why Supporting Black-Owned Businesses Matters

Supporting Black-owned businesses goes beyond just making a purchase. It's an investment in:

Economic Empowerment: By supporting Black-owned businesses, we help create jobs, build wealth, and foster economic growth within Black communities.

Community Building: Black-owned businesses often serve as pillars of their communities, providing essential goods and services, and creating spaces for connection and collaboration.

Diversity and Innovation: Black entrepreneurs bring unique perspectives and ideas to the marketplace, driving innovation and expanding the range of products and services available to consumers.

There are many ways to show your support for Black-owned businesses this month and throughout the year:

Shop at Black-owned businesses: Make a conscious effort to seek out and patronize Black-owned establishments in your area.

Spread the word: Tell your friends and family about your favorite Black-owned businesses and encourage them to support them as well.

Use your platform: If you have a social media following or other platform, use it to highlight Black-owned businesses and share their stories.

Nominate a business: Help us recognize outstanding Black-owned businesses in the Pacific Northwest by submitting a nomination.

Do you know of a Black-owned business in the Pacific Northwest that deserves recognition? We want to hear from you! Nominate your favorite business today and tell us why you think they should be featured. Your nomination could help shine a spotlight on a deserving enterprise and inspire others to support them.

ICYMI: Last night, Deaunte Damper was joined by Equity Analyst Nirae Petty for an all-new episode of We Live In Color. They discussed Petty's journey to self-discovery and her family legacy, as well as the work she's doing in communities around Seattle.

"Data is supposed to bring truth, and you can't make effective change if data is not accurate, and identity is a very sensitive subject because it's so intersectional," Petty said. " A lot of times, you can apply a policy to help a certain community, but it might not be helping everybody because you're not looking at the different layers of somebody's identity."

Homestead Community Land Trust presents: A Conversation with Isabel Wilkerson and Marcus Harrison Green.

Isabel Wilkerson is the author of the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestsellers The Warmth of Other Suns, and Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Proceeds will support Homestead’s work to create housing justice in King County. Wilkerson won the Pulitzer Prize for her deeply humane narrative writing while serving as Chicago Bureau Chief of The New York Times in 1994, making her the first black woman in the history of American journalism to win a Pulitzer Prize and the first African American to win for individual reporting. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded Wilkerson the National Humanities Medal for “championing the stories of an unsung history.”

Ms. Wilkerson will join Marcus Harrison Green, publisher of the South Seattle Emerald and columnist for the Seattle Times, in a thought-provoking discussion about these critical issues.

Mikayla Weary, a film major at Dillard University in New Orleans, shares her insightful experience as a production intern at Converge Media. Working on The Day With Trae, Mikayla found the internship to be an invaluable hands-on learning opportunity. Unlike traditional film school, which often focuses heavily on theoretical knowledge, this internship allowed her to dive straight into the field.

“It’s definitely been like learning in every realm. You kind of get into the field, like you’re in there, and it’s just the best way to learn,” Mikayla explains. “In film school, you’re often just in the books, and there’s not really the opportunity to be in the field, especially with people who look like us in this industry.”

Mikayla emphasized the significance of working with professionals who share similar backgrounds and experiences. The mentorship she received was instrumental in her growth, allowing her to actively participate in various aspects of production and gain practical skills that textbooks couldn’t provide.

Working alongside TraeAnna Holiday, the host of The Day With Trae, was another highlight of Mikayla’s internship. “Trae is amazing,” Mikayla shares. “She’s funny, really cool, and a great person to look up to. Watching how she connects with each guest and contributes to the community has been wonderful.”
