I was on a flight with my 5-year-old daughter, Ella, who was happily watching her iPad with headphones on. Across the aisle sat a boy about her age, and he kept glancing over at her screen. His whining escalated, prompting his mother—whom I’ll refer to as Entitled Mom (EM)—to tap me on the shoulder. "We’re being responsible and not allowing our son any screen time on this trip," she said. "Could you please put the iPad away? It’s upsetting him." I was taken aback. "No, sorry. My daughter is calm and enjoying her show." EM’s smile quickly faded. "Wow, so you’d rather ruin our family trip than take a break from your kid’s precious screen?" She muttered loudly enough for everyone to hear, "Some parents can’t say no these days. No wonder kids are spoiled." I chose to ignore her, but halfway through the flight, her son threw an even bigger tantrum. That’s when EM “accidentally” knocked over Ella’s tray, sending the iPad crashing to the floor. "Oops, so clumsy of me!" she said with a smirk. Ella burst into tears, and I was furious inside, but EM pretended it was just an accident, acting completely innocent.
