I just sent this email to the Maryland House Health and Government Operations Committee. It is my understanding HB576 the Involuntary Outpatient Commitment legislation has been pushed through subcommittee and will be put before the full Health and Government Operations Committee, maybe today, or soon. If you live in Maryland - reach out to your Delegates this morning and let them know this bill may be coming before them. If Delegates are on the Committee, please urge them to consider the discussions, and that someone tried to add an amendment yesterday that was given less than a minute for a response. Here's what I sent:
Hi,
I am one of your constituents. I testified at the hearings on HB576 requesting an unfavorable report.
There are too many holes with this legislation.
The idea that it can be fixed after it is passed will cause great damage to those who are subject to faulty legislation.
If this bill comes before you for an action, please give it an UNFAVORABLE RESPONSE and say NO to HB576.
I am available to discuss any earlier points I tried to make.
Maryland has been hailed nationally as a defender of rights to freedom for too long to let a law that will cause damage to those under its grasp pass through.
This should never be the attitude of it is the best we can get, or that there have been three meetings about it already.
Think of the meetings you are mandating people to attend with this law, more time for discussion of its known deleterious consequences in states where similar legislation is active is too much time to take to be sure that there are not rights violations baked into the fabric of the legislation that will certainly violate the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Convention Against Torture, not to mention Constitutional and Civil Rights, and moral right.
If you have any questions, I can be reached at (516) 319-4295.
Thank you for your time and attention.
