Important question; what would you do if you were X?
What do I mean?
So often we tell ourselves things like:
‘I’m just not a creative person.’
‘I’m just not a praying person.’
‘I’m just not a disciplined person.’
‘I’m just not a workout person.’
And so on.
Every time I hear that, I wince. When we say these things, we limit ourselves. We put ourselves in a box. We deny ourselves permission to live happier, more fulfilled lives.
If you want to change, start asking yourself this question; What would I do if I were X?
‘What would I do if I were creative?’
‘What would I do if I were athletic?’
‘What would I do if I were disciplined?’
‘What would I do if I were a workout person?’
And then do that thing. Over and over again.
Recently I realized that I didn’t see myself as a businessman
If I’m not a businessman, then it’s okay to:
- Play a couple hours of video games even though there are better things I could be doing
- Not bring my best into work every single day
- Not give my team members the attention and respect they deserve in every interaction
- Wake up 5 minutes before a meeting instead of prepare and bring my best
It was high time I accepted what God had called me to do and stepped fully into it
When I discovered that limiting belief, I prayed and asked ‘What would I do if I were a businessman?’
The first thing that popped into my head is ‘Buy a suit.’
What!? A suit?? But that’s a waste of money! That’s just a selfish display!
I did it anyway. I dressed up anytime I had a meeting.
The mental shift was immediate. I started treating my customers and my coworkers with more integrity and respect. I brought my best to every interaction.
All of this potential I’d squandered for so long because I had limiting beliefs about myself.
So again I ask you - What would you do if you were a disciplined person? What What would you do if you were a praying person? What would you do if you were a good spouse? What would you do if you were a good friend?
That’s the million dollar question
