Turnovers cost the Whitehall football team a game they could have, and probably should have, won. And a 21-14 defeat at the hands of Independence left the WHSers at 0-2 in the conference and 1-3 overall. The deciding touchdown turned out to be a 47-yard interception return by Independence’s Matt Rose with 5:52 left in the game.
The Arcadia High School football team won its fourth straight game with a 19-8 victory over Viroqua on Friday. This week, the Raiders will host Black River Falls in what should be a very tough game.

Alma kicked a 25-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter and beat Whitehall 17-16. The win kept the Rivermen in a tie for first with Independence and Augusta; the Indees beat Osseo-Fairchild 14-12 on a pair of touchdowns by Randy Symicek.
Defensive back Ryan Solberg scooped up a bobbled swing pass and returned it to Melrose-Mindoro’s 36-yard line, setting up Mike Nichols’ go-ahead touchdown with 3:56 left to play as G-E-T startled the Mustangs 13-0 last Friday. Two minutes later Todd McLeod picked off a Fred Johnson pass and juggled his way into the end zone to ice the Redmen’s second consecutive shutout.
High school athletes in Arcadia will soon be spending more time on team buses going to away games. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association adopted a conference realignment plan for state public schools. The plan is scheduled to go into effect in the fall of 1977. Arcadia continues to belong to the Coulee Conference along with seven other schools. The league contains three new schools. Black River Falls, Westby and Royall take the places of Bangor, Cochrane-Fountain City and Melrose-Mindoro. C-FC and Mel-Min join the nearby Dairyland Conference, which will swell from eight to 12 schools. Bangor replaces Royall and Westby in the 14-school Scenic Central division. Schools in the new Coulee Conference range in size from West Salem with 356 to Black River Falls with 703. Arcadia with 469 students, rests in the middle. Other schools in the conference are Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, Holmen and Onalaska.
