Members of the Trempealeau County Economic Development committee expressed concern about money allocated in the 2025 budget for economic development.

The conversation was a part of a larger discussion related to a proposal to borrow $7 million to meet capital needs. A portion of that borrowing — $250,000 — is set for economic development, a conversation that revolved mostly around child care.

Paul Syverson has been a fixture in county government since June of 1979, when he started as an accountant for the highway department. In 1988, at the urging of then-county clerk Harold Tomter, Syverson ran for and was first elected as clerk. He then began in 1989 the work of helping organize and record the actions of county supervisors. He will have held that post for 35 years when his successor takes over in January.

Members of the county's personnel committee and the board chair all gave their support to the new county administrator following "inappropriate" public criticism of her by the coroner.

Committee members and board chair John Aasen signed a statement Tuesday that "we support our County Administrator's efforts to drive positive organizational change."

"Accountability and continuous improvement are essential to maintaining a productive and healthy workplace, and we trust her leadership in identifying areas for growth," the statement continues. "Change can be challenging, but it's necessary to better serve our communities, and we remain committed to fostering an open, respectful work environment.”

County coroner Bonnie Kindschy at Monday evening's board of supervisors meeting criticized Administrator Rebecca Glewen as a "bully" for how she handled her efforts to reorganize county government.

"In hindsight," Aasen said, "I should have required that (the coroner) stop. It was not only inaccurate information but shared in a highly inappropriate manner."

The trial of a 60-year-old Arcadia man charged with providing a girl with drugs and alcohol and then assaulting her over two days in 2023 is scheduled to begin Nov. 13.

John Jones, of 110 N. Jackson St., appeared in court Monday where Trempealeau County Circuit Court Judge Rian Radtke turned down the motion of District Attorney John Sacia to include in the trial information about an incident in Wyoming in 1998.

Speaking to assembled media members following a campaign event at the Goplin Homestead Farm in rural Osseo, Baldwin said she is proud to have carried Trempealeau County in the past and hopes her appearance on Monday gives her an advantage again in the November election.

“Showing up matters,” Baldwin said. “Listening to people matters, and sometimes that makes a difference.”

Several Trempealeau County supervisors sought a closer review of a proposal to borrow $7 million, perhaps annually, to meet capital needs for a budget that is otherwise restrained by taxing limits.

“I’m worried that we’ll become dependent,” said Supervisor Dick Miller at Monday’s board review of the 2025 budget. “We started low, with $2 million, and now we’re at $7 million. We’ve become used to it.”

The Blair city council voted to begin the process of razing a property at 236 West Broadway Street at last week Monday’s regular monthly meeting.

Council members reviewed a report issued by an inspector who found the property to be “old, dilapidated, or out of repair, and, consequently, dangerous, unsafe, unsanitary, or otherwise unfit for human habitation.” The inspection continued to say that repair of the building is unreasonable and that the city’s building inspector determined the cost to repair the building would exceed 50 percent of its assessed value.

A special meeting of the Galesville city council has been called for this Thursday after the council voted to spend approximately $19,000 for a project not listed on the agenda.

The council approved paying $18,860.80 to repair culverts along Campus Court, after a discussion that included the idea that property owners could be required to cover that cost. However, the topic was not listed on the agenda for that meeting so a special meeting has been called for 5 p.m. this Thursday to discuss and possibly take action again on the matter.
