EX-JURSEA President announces campaign against irregularities at JU

Jammu: 10-11-23: Dr. Vikas Sharma, former president of the Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association (JURSEA), has announced a full-scale campaign beginning November 13, 2024, against what he describes as “widespread irregularities” at Jammu University under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Prof. Umesh Rai.

Demanding high level probe to unearth the administrative failure and corruption in Jammu University, Dr. Sharma outlined the campaign’s activities at a press conference today, which will include a series of protests, a signature drive, and other advocacy efforts aimed at exposing and addressing alleged administrative lapses.

During the press briefing, Dr. Sharma accused Prof. Rai of overseeing various violations, including a recruitment scam, non-approval of critical undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses in the Centre of Distance & Open Education (CDOE), and inadequate investigation into the alleged su***de of an associate professor on campus.

In a detailed statement, Dr. Sharma alleged that during Prof. Rai’s tenure, several instances of irregular recruitment occurred, citing that individuals with private college experience were directly appointed to associate professor roles, while qualified assistant professors within Jammu University were overlooked for promotions. He also alleged that a candidate with industrial experience from Prof. Rai’s hometown was appointed as a professor at the university.

Dr. Sharma claimed that favoritism was evident in the recently held interviews for the administrative posts, alleging that PhD holders were given inconsistent weightage on their applications, with certain candidates reportedly allocated higher marks tailored to their profiles.

He added that, in violation of UGC guidelines, candidates were not informed of merit criteria before interviews, and appointments were delayed, with approvals not being signed by the Financial Advisor until nine days after interviews.

He claimed that he had already forwarded the list of candidates most likely to be selected by the Vice Chancellor for the said posts to the Financial Advisor to convey the intentions of the Vice Chancellor. It is testimony to my apprehensions about the adjustment of blue-eyed candidates on the administrative posts.

Another concern raised by Dr. Sharma was the university’s failure to adopt amended Distance Education Bureau (DEB) guidelines, issued four years ago. This oversight has reportedly led to the suspension of two UG courses and four PG and PG Diploma programs, placing the academic futures of hundreds of distance learners in jeopardy.

Also, an Associate Professor alleged committed su***de in his department which is a matter of investigation as under what circumstances he committed su***de and who was responsible for his death. SIT was constituted but no formal FIR was registered in this case. Hence, high level probe is required to unearth the conspiracy angle, if any, in this case. He demanded registration of FIR against the Vice Chancellor and Director of CDOE for playing with the career of students.

In calling for a high-level investigation into the administration, Dr. Sharma emphasized the need for accountability and reform at Jammu University.
