In an interesting pivot for the platform, Instagram CEO Adam Moserri revealed in a video posted to Twitter that the app will be making a lot of changes in the coming months, including moving away from its prior focus on image sharing.

"We're no longer a photo-sharing app," Adam said in the video. "The number one reason people say that they use Instagram, in research, is to be entertained. So people are looking to us for that."

Despite initially launching as a photo-sharing platform, Instagram's CEO shared some changes coming in 2021, revealing it'll focus on video and shopping content.

When I first entered the marketing field, 11 years ago, I was helping people set up social media pages, publish content, manage email lists, enhance their SEO, audit their website, create YouTube videos, advertise events, print flyers, and make banners.

Although it wasn’t altogether different than it is today, it’s now an imperative that your business be online, create content, and do it well.��

Another imperative? Not being a one-man or woman island. Maybe you love social media, if you do? Great.

However... are you publishing daily, weekly, regularly? Are you messaging with people in the PMs and DMs? Are you responding to every and all comments. Too many times we think in terms of GEOGRAPHY and DEMOGRAPHICS ... without truly understanding our audience.

I've seen people pay (literally!) THOUSANDS ($$,$$$) of dollars to ad companies that expect Facebook's smart algorithm to do all the work that they don't .

WHY THE CLIENT IS ALWAYS RIGHT APPROACH IS WRONG

One of the first rules that you learn as a freelancer is, "The client is always right." In the marketing and content strategy world the phrase is oft repeated as a mantra and as overused as, "Content is king!" However, the "Yes, man!" approach can backfire—leaving your campaigns bankrupt and your clients unaware of the talent that you brought to the table and their brand. This is how you can educate, inspire, and become a client-requested marketing strategist without sacrificing your personal cost-per-click.

Have you ever heard the expression, "Every time a bell rings, your campaign has a low conversion rate?" Of course not, as I just made it up. What I didn't make up is that no one will know your value and expertise unless you share it with them. By the time a business or brand hires outside marketing support, they've either exhausted their team's expertise, capabilities, or want success that they can guarantee.

Step 1: Create Positive Change

However, established brands in search of marketing support have usually developed bad habits. For instance, their process of reaching out to customers may be better suited to the typewriter-era than the Age of Aquarius, ahem ... make that the Age of Algorithms. Why is changing a bad habit or pattern difficult for business owners who really do want to succeed? To understand "why" a client would cling to past failed methods ... consider your own failed New Year's Resolutions of yore. Change is hard and business owners struggle with it for the same reason that you haven't started training for a half marathon or drinking green tea in place of fully loaded coffee. Our habits are just that— familiar patterns. Humans are highly skilled at developing an emotional attachment to their own (even negative!) patterns and this extends into the business world. To create something new, you'll have to take an honest look at what works & what doesn't work ... and communicate that to your clients in a way that lets them know that you share their end goal. By putting them at ease ... with your expertise, they'll be more equipped to replace failed processes or messaging with something that works in real time.

2. Don't Erase History ... Be Part of It

Every brand that you help to promote has a history and a goal. Your job is to make sure that history and goal is properly communicated (to and from you) and fully infused into your strategy. Let your clients know that detailed testing is the secret weapon behind smart creative messaging and successful campaigns. By communicating your systematic approach, clearly, you'll leave less room for surprise should A/B testing shows "A"... when your client really wanted "B." By communicating, fearlessly, when the positive results DO arrive, you'll be able to pat yourself on the back and rest assured that will be your client's favorite hashtag to credit for their success.

3. Don't Fold When You Need to Explain

One of the mistakes that new and seasoned marketers alike make is to fold when they need to explain. The client wants to do what they've always done and you want to keep your monthly rate. You have to care more about the campaign than the money in your pocket. By taking the time to educate your clients on the behind-the-scenes secrets that every digital marketer knows, you'll educate them to a level that allows you to move the strategy forward. Give every client a 2021 rewrite of how algorithms impact the posts that their customers and followers see, why organic conversions are worth their weight in gold, and how to publish interesting content ... without oversharing until formerly loyal followers unsubscribe.

While you should respect your client's wishes for their budget, campaign duration, base strategy, and the brand goals that they strongly believe in ... you were hired for a reason. While some businesses do hire staff and/or consultants who exist only to confirm their own biases, arrive at every meeting equipped with data and analytics that do what words rarely do ... tell the truth!
