One of my goals for the past few years has been expanding my faculties when it comes to playing jazz. I’ve really always been a rock drummer in my heart of hearts and for that reason jazz was always difficult for me. My intuition always felt wrong and I had a tendency to want to insert the backbeat into my playing.

Now after many years of essentially forcing myself to play and practice jazz…I feel much more comfortable on jazz gigs. In fact the jazz influence has really infiltrated all aspects of my playing to the point that rock players comment on my different approach.

8 stroke rolls boi!

A lot of cats ignore the 8 and 10 stroke rolls...Well they can be extremely useful in a variety of applications and here’s one that I like to play. It kind of reminds me of a Steve Gadd lick with a little more mustard on it

This is my submission for the Drumhead/Hudson Music Gaddiments contest. I’ve had a ton of fun trying to come up with creative interpretations of the exercises in this book. So regardless of how I do, It was time well spent!
Thanks for watching!✌🏻🤘🏻

(My actual submission is on my YouTube btw I just thought I’d share it here as well. Link to YouTube in bio!)

Here’s a ghost 👻 note pattern that I play all the time. It works really well with this kick pattern, but you can definitely play other things with the kick. It’s definitely challenging at high speeds to get clean and it something I’m still working on. ✌🏻

Here’s a warmup I’ve been doing lately. It’s just splitting between the hands and kick drum with a hi hat ostinato.

Btw always start slow and work yourself up to a faster speed with a click track.

Eazyish sixtuplet fill...

It’s all based on RL KK but it starts with the bass drum. It’s a great fill to do when you have a little section to shine in a song but you don’t wanna get too crazy and syncopated with the timing.

Enjoy!

Fast Sixtuplet fill!
This is a fill I love to use at the end of tunes or during solo sections. It's based on a fill concept that I lifted from Elvin Jones and Keith Carlock. It uses paradiddle-diddles with doubles on the feet as way of quickly getting around the kit.
Once you get it down it's super satisfying to play.
Here I am playing with a double pedal but I often play it with a single pedal as well and I would practice both ways If you are a double pedal player.
You can also invert the sticking to:
LRllrrKK LRKK
For a slightly different sound with different options for getting around the kit.
Enjoy!

I’ve often said that six stroke rolls are possibly the most useful rudiment to have under your belt as a drummer and this is further proof of that!

These linear six stroke rolls are fantastic for solos and for setting up ensemble hits.

Link to my YouTube is in the bio! Enjoy!
