If I could step back 39 years and 6 months in time, I would have so much to say to this little dude. He wouldn’t believe where we’ve been, what we’ve seen, the things we’ve done, and especially not where I’m about to go.

I shouldn’t be here. And not just as a nod to my old friends who have been praying on my downfall since I was an arrogant prick in my 20s - I mean I wasn’t even supposed to survive birth. My mom had an aneurysm while in labour - in 1983 in the backwoods ass hospital I was born in, that’s a death sentence. But somehow, we made it.

Here’s the thing, I don’t care what you think about me. Whatever version of me that has you harbouring ill feelings is long dead. But as I step fully into being a 40 year old man, as a business owner, as a partner, as a friend, as a unique talent in a business full of talented men & women from all walks of life - I don’t believe in much - but I believe in me. I believe I’ve been blessed, I believe I am here for something so so special, because I have seen it and I continue to see it, and I hope that little guy can also see it when he looks in the mirror - I know he won’t. But I do now. We aren’t there yet - but I can promise you Andre, that finish line is in sight, and this time - we fu***ng EARNED it.

We all know Florida isn’t exactly my favourite place in the world - but let me tell you something right god damned now; Bodega makes the absolute best fu***ng Cuban sandwich in existence. This thing is INSANE. I have had many Cubans from many places, in many different styles, but this…this was a revelation and no one comes even CLOSE. My mouth didn’t even know what to do the second I took the first bite. All I could do was cuss. Like I have never taken a bite of food and yelled “motherF**KER” before in my life.

If you told me they made every ingredient in house, I would fu***ng believe every word. The Pan Cubano is PERFECT. It’s slathered in nutty, delicious butter, the pickles are 100% house made, because I’ve never tasted any brine like it. The way the mustard, lechon, ham play together in a way I have never experienced - those flavours are fu***ng harmonious. A symphony on your palate, the fu***ng Super Bowl of pressed sandwiches. Something this simple has no business being this good - and this is the shining star of Tampa/St. Pete cuisine.

Matter of fact, it’s the best thing I’ve ever had in the entire state of Florida. It’s no wonder it’s award winning, you can taste the culture in every bite.

I don’t usually do this, but I had to use photos from their page because my camera did NOT eat first in this exchange - and it’s so massive, I could only eat half. And the cortaditos - don’t sleep on it. Cubano styled, with the prefect amount of turbanado sugar passed through beautifully pulled cafe bustello coffee (at least that’s what it tasted like) and a little whole milk.

And it doesn’t stop there, the whole menu from the Platos to the Lèchon and Pollo Asada, to the fresh pressed juices to the smoothies and even the very good (looking) vegetarian options - I don’t know where Guy Fieri is talking about, but THIS place is Flavourtown 🇨🇺

I know Charleston is supposed to be this Food Mecca, but can we get less shrimp and grits and more of this? Because almost nothing in Charleston comes close to this Cubano - and I feel like I’m going to be chasing this dragon for a LONG time to come. 😩

If you half literate f***s read one book this year, make it this one. It’s only 100 pages, but it might be one of the most impactful, though provoking, and mind boggling novellas you’ll consume. Steven Peck does an amazing job expertly asking all of the questions we all have and all wish we could ask, even though we don’t know who to ask about what happens next - if anything at all. It moves through religions, anti-religion, and everything in between all to bring you to finding the correct version of “your story” in order to relieve yourself of torment.

Beautifully written, easy read, will leave you thinking until your brain hurts…which doesn’t take much for some of you.

But seriously, go buy this.

And yes - I laid in my hotel bed all day reading and regretting life choices, whatevs

Sometimes you just need a good home cooked comfort meals…and wine. Always wine.

🧅 Homemade French Onion Soup (with bacon lardons, thyme, burgundy, and bourbon) and toasted the croutons using the rendered bacon fat 🤤

🥪 BLT with cherry pepper relish, red onion, pickles, house pickled jalapeños, olives, & green peppers with a lemon garlic avocado spread on a really good onion asiago bread that I snagged from Publix. Pandemic is over, we ain’t baking bread anymore 😂

My life (and my camera) have all led me to such strange and amazing places in my life, but never could I imagine it would bring me here, to be able to hangout with Barry Bostwick who was the Mayor of one of my FAVOURITE 90s ABC sitcoms “Spin City” (which had Micheal J Fox as the lead) - which I usually watched in syndication on Saturday afternoons on Fox as a kid.

Can’t thank Jules enough for the opportunity to be able to shoot that meet & greet and for Barry literally being the funniest, light hearted, and coolest dude ever along with his son Brian who was super nice and for the first time hitting up the Rocky Horror Convention Circuit with his dad.

Man, what a weird life. I love this stuff. Thanks Mayor Winston!
