Pawnee County COVID-19 update
By: C. Tabler
The big uptick that many health care professionals feared might follow Christmas has not materialized, at least not yet, in Pawnee County.
The latest statistics released by the Pawnee County Health Department show that there have been 44 new cases in the last 14 days and 24 new cases in the past 7 days. These figures are down slightly from previous weeks.
There are 28 cases currently active.
KDHE statistics show Pawnee County with 1,017 total cases that would include the community and the state facilities. Those numbers show that there have been 7 deaths.
The Pawnee County Health Department has been administering vaccines this week to health care workers and front-line service providers.
On the good news front, Wayne Gore with the Department of Corrections stated that they have no active cases currently at the prison.
Pawnee Valley Community Hospital is also administering vaccines to their health care workers after receiving two shipments of the vaccine.
Melanie Urban, Administrator at the hospital, stated that the hospital staff is doing well and that they are able to handle all hospitalizations and outpatients as normal.
Fort Larned USD 495 resumed classes on Tuesday and the district has continued in the code yellow on the county matrix which requires all students and staff to wear face masks and hand washing and social distancing is recommended. The District has been very successful with their back to school plan and have been able to maintain in-class learning rather than remote learning as many districts in the state have moved to.
Pawnee Heights USD 496 is following similar guidelines requiring mask use and other safety protocols, as they were before Christmas
