For this episode of The HipHopHumboldt Podcast I had the pleasure to do an interview with one of my favorite artists, Cali Los Mikyo! It was great to get into his history, where he grew up, and how he got into the local scene. We got into some stories from years back, and a lot of discussion about how Cali Los Mikyo is paving the way for youth to have better outcomes in Humboldt County.

During the episode, I couldn't remember the name but it was the ACLU who published the "Failing Grade" report highlighting disparities in outcomes amongst Indigenous students in local schools,

and so with that being said I really have major respect for what Cali Los Mikyo and his close friend Joaquin Thunderbird are doing to grab the torch and keep the right things going for the youth and for the community and culture of Indigenous peoples. And that's before even speaking on the art! If you didn't know, Cali Los Mikyo is a powerhouse out here dropping that realness, some real strength in the messages via the music! And he's saavy and hungry enough to be doing the entire process himself, from making the beats to filming and editing the visual content and marketing. To let people know, the Tismil Family Farm is holding an Artist Market and Showcase in Hoopa, CA later this year to spread awareness about prevention against Fentanyl & Missing Murdered Indigenous people. This will be a one day event with artists, musicians, poetry, artist market, youth workshops, cultural demonstrations, and exchange for honoring local youth and families of fentanyl and MMIP victims. Absolutely huge loss for the culture. What I wasn't going to do was perpetrate and rush to post as if I knew the man for as long as most of you. But it is completely necessary that Garth Cultivader gets his due respect for what he did for Humboldt County Hip Hop, our community, and our culture. I'd call him a Godfather of the Game, self proclaimed Keeper Of The Garden, and a sponsor of The HipHopHumboldt Podcast, he was so much to so many and this leaves a gaping hole in the fabric of a community he helped cultivate. But, the fabric is not ripped, and a lot of souls that he touched are weaving strength in our community thru the love he showed us. Through his words, thru his actions, thru Hip Hop. He set the bar with his music, his brand, and the effort he put in. He was an example of how to live your life and love your life. He stood up for the culture, and spoke loudly about sustainable living. He appreciated the work happening via The HipHopHumboldt Podcast, and I can't tell you how thankful I was when he decided to sponsor. He prepaid for a year of sponsorship and that genuinely helped the podcast pay it's bills. A great man with nothing but positivity and calming energy the few times I had the pleasure to be around him. This is a devastating turn of events for our area, but even thru the short discussions I had with him, I know he's the type of inspiring legend that would want us to remember him from a place of love rather than sorrow. My condolences to his family, loved ones, to Humboldt, and to Hip Hop. Thank you for everything you did for the culture, Garth Cultivader🙏🏾🕊🙏🏾

For Episode 53 of The HipHopHumboldt Podcast, I had the pleasure to sit down in the studio with Kemistree! Kemistree has been doing hip hop for a while, and has been doing shows in Humboldt since before the pandemic. During the episode, we talked about Kemistree's history starting off in music and growing up on the East Coast. Kemistree got into how she came out here and started navigated the scene. Kemistree talked about turning up at The Mateel, and the thrill of doing shows. We talked about the December 2nd 2023 Hip Hop Showcase at the Arcata Theatre Lounge featuring over 20 performers and a live band. Kemistree got into the 2022 Halloween show that also included a live band, once again coordinated by Mo Humboldt and Brian Swislow.

We got into some other topics, some important conversation about this incorrect idea that exists in the community that hip hop shows bring violence. "I think Hip Hop heals," Kemistree said. We talked about how things are moving out here and how this is the time to start tapping in with Humboldt County Hip Hop. We got into some recent community happenings and some perspective. We also talked about The How R.U.D.E. Podcast, how she got involved, and how enjoyable it has been. We got into what Kemistree has coming in terms of music, I'll let you listen to the episode to find out more!

In my opinion, Kemistree is one of the best artists in Humboldt County, and has an uncanny ability to connect with the crowd and timeless music that you will enjoy in all kinds of moods and scenes.

These two gentlemen are restarting a project that Ole (shoutout to Ole and Diamondback) started years ago, Humboldt Storms! Kyz J got into the first Humboldt Storms project, and all the different sides of it! Jay got into what he's been doing, and how he linked up with Kyz J to get the second project in the Humboldt Storms series produced!
