On behalf of Fall Productions, I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe new year. I send out a big thank you to our wonderful crew who make the broadcasts of UCSB sports possible. I also want to thank UCSB Director of Athletics, Kelly Barskey, and Deputy Director of Athletics, Tom Hastings, for all of their support through the years. Here's a beautiful tribute to Bob Fall written by Jerry Cople:

Sea Land lost one of their true pioneers today. And a man who dates back to World War II. He loved the sea and one would think he must have as his first vessel was sunk by a German U boat off the coast of Europe.

After the war he joined Waterman Steamship and that's where he was when McLean bought the company in 1956. I first "ran into" him in California in early 1962 where he and Captain Roy Whitmire were starting the Inter-Coastal Division of Sea-l;and. The three ships in the trade at that time were the Fanwood, Chatham and Short Hills all break bulk. But were replaced in late 1962 by the converted T-3's with well remembered names like the San Francisco, Los Angeles, Elisabethport, San Juan etc.

To know Bob was to also know how he cared for "his" ships and would defend them against any and all who might not care as much as he thought they should. He was a man not bashful with words. In some quarters he was known as Cabeza De Roja and his red hair went perfectly with his sometime temperament.

But the good captain was a caring man. He loved his family (four children two girls and two boys) all delightful people. And he knew his place with Jeannie his long standing wife who left him a few years ago.

But the home office called him so after attaining a Master's Degree (MBA) in California he went back to New Jersey where he was Vice President of Sea Operations and he did it well.

In addition to his family, Bob loved golf. He never saw a golf course he didn't like and he loved nothing better than playing with his two sons. He also was not opposed to a "heave ahead" at the end of the day especially with his long time colleague Captain George Whitaker and I can assure you they didn't always agree. And I managed to get involved in "one or two" of their little debates. Putting it all together he lived a very full life and nobody loved the sea more than he did.

Captain Fall had been living in New Jersey with his four children scattered from Maryland, Texas, Seattle and Southern California. If/when further details will be released, you will be informed. Bob would have been 98 in a couple of weeks and as Sinatra used to sing about life...Bob pretty much did it his way!
