Happy National Log Cabin Day! Did you know the classic toy, Lincoln Logs, was invented by John Lloyd Wright, an architect, toy maker, Wisconsin Badger, and son of Frank Lloyd Wright?

John came up with the idea for Lincoln Logs when he was in Japan helping his famous father design Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel. Frank Lloyd Wright was tasked with building a structure that could withstand earthquakes. The elder Wright created a design that relied on a system of interlocking timber beams to allow the hotel to sway but not collapse during tremors. After a disagreement with his father, John left Japan and returned to Chicago. Using blueprints for the Imperial Hotel as a model, John created a toy construction set of notched pieces of wood that children could use to build log cabins and other rustic buildings. Unlike other building toys at the time, Wright’s miniature logs could withstand the shockwaves of a rambunctious toy room.

Lincoln Logs began selling in 1924 with the picture of President Abraham Lincoln on the box and the tagline, “Interesting playthings typifying the spirit of America.” It became a best seller. Over 100 million sets have been sold worldwide. Lincoln Logs was inducted in the National Toy Hall of Fame in 1999.

Former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant visited B-Side Records in Madison, Wisconsin on Monday afternoon. The shop’s owner, Steve Manley, said it was the biggest celebrity visit he’d ever received and “tried not to freak out” while he left Plant alone to shop for the next half hour.

Eventually, Plant came up to the checkout counter and asked Manley what was playing over the store’s sound system. It was “The Window” by indie rock band Ratboys and Plant ended up buying their record.

Before he left the store, Plant signed a copy of his own 2017 solo studio album, “Carry Fire,” for Manley and his wife. “He talked about how much he enjoyed that record, and he had me play it in the store,” Manley said.

Plant, who now tours as a solo singer and songwriter, was in Madison after playing a concert with American bluegrass singer Alison Krauss on Saturday at Breese Stevens Field.
