Happy 4th of July 2024 - Independence Day

OurSeniors Vendors, Readers, Subscribers, and Donors…Let’s Talk Independence

We know that you’re brimming with excitement as we approach a very special and universally well-known day in American history—Independence Day! You’ve probably already prepared for your upcoming cookouts, shopped for decor in patriotic colors, and bought flags in bulk but while we know the 4th of July is a popular day for the country, we want to make sure that you remember the true meaning of it.

The 4th is about more than barbecues, fireworks, parades, and baking cakes that look like our great flag. It signifies what happened on July 4, 1776…the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress.

This day represents separating the 13 North American colonies from Great Britain and celebrates the signing of the declaration that made this separation real. The declaration wasn’t signed on the 4th though. 12 out of 13 colonies voted in favor of the motion for independence made by Richard Henry Lee. The declaration itself was actually signed on August 2, 1776, and because of this fact, you might be asking yourself…why exactly do we celebrate this on the 4th? The reason that we do is because the 4th is when we ‘adopted’ the Declaration of Independence and since then the U.S. has been an independent nation.

Well, It’s Official!

You’ve heard correctly…the ‘Summer 2024’ edition of OurSeniors Magazine is officially released and we want to celebrate our team's hard work with you. We put a lot of effort into curating the perfect pages for this issue and our reward is when our readers enjoy what we take to print and what we release digitally. We’re sure that you already know this but you have the option to get both, a print and digital copy. The OurSeniors website allows you to easily view and share your favorite editions and what’s better is that you can stay on top of what we’re planning and what we release.

As always, we want to extend an open invitation for all of our readers and supporters to join us for our Lunch/Brunch and Learn events, our fundraisers, and events that our team gets excited about. What we hope to provide for seniors, we also want all of those involved with our initiative to have the same feeling of accomplishment, involvement, and joy that we do.

Also, we want to remind you that while you’re hosting family and friends and shopping for fireworks to honor the brave men and women who dedicated their lives to shaping the great nation we call home. Take a moment to remember their valor and express the gratitude you have for the sacrifices that many others have made for us today.

ATTENTION Floridians! IRS Issues Warning on Impersonation Scams

By The office of Senator Rick Scott

As a member of the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging, Senator Rick Scott is fighting to protect Florida's seniors from fraud and was proud to host a Senate Aging Hearing in the Villages with Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody on the growing risk of financial scams.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued a warning about the rising threat of impersonation scams.

These scams are targeting older adults by pretending to be government officials, aiming to steal sensitive personal information and money. By posing as representatives from agencies such as the IRS, or other government agencies, these fraudsters use fear and deceit to exploit their victims.

Key points to remember: Individuals should understand how and when the IRS contacts taxpayers. Remember the following:

The IRS will never demand immediate payment via prepaid debit cards, gift cards or wire transfers. Typically, if taxes are owed, the IRS will send a bill by mail first.
The IRS will never threaten to involve local police or other law enforcement agencies.
The IRS will never demand payment without allowing opportunities to dispute or appeal the amount owed.
The IRS will never request credit, debit, or gift card numbers over the phone.

If taxpayers are uncertain about the legitimacy of IRS communications, they can contact IRS customer service for verification at +1 (800) 829-1040, or for the hearing impaired, TTY/TDD +1 (800) 829-4059. To view details about an individual's tax account, they can set up or check their IRS individual online account on IRS.gov.

IR-2024-164: IRS warns against scams targeting seniors; joins other federal agencies to recognize special awareness day — has additional information, also available in Spanish.

Be Careful, the Scammers are Everywhere!

Building a backyard pool is expensive, but Diana Decker of Westlake had saved up for it. In 2020, she thought she gave her investment to a reputable company, Villa Pavers and Pools.

"It makes you not want to trust anybody anymore," said Decker in 2021.

A state investigation found that the company and its owner, Ricardo Villarroel Duerto, were not licensed and he was charged with racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering.

Villarroel is responsible for defrauding Decker and nearly 100 homeowners for pool work that was never done over the years across Florida, totaling more than $1 million in losses. The Florida Attorney General’s office prosecuted the case.

"The gentleman who’s responsible for taking your money is being sentenced to prison. It’s highly unlikely he’s going to be repaying you or be able to get a job to be able to repay you anytime soon," said Chris Castillo, a plaintiff’s attorney at Apex Law Firm in Tampa.

Villaroel defrauded three Tampa Bay area homeowners in Temple Terrace, Clearwater and Wesley Chapel. Castillo works on consumer cases, and he is not representing victims against Villarroel. He shared what you can watch for if you’re looking for contractor work.

"Research them online. Check out their Google reviews, check out their Better Business Bureau reviews. They have complaints on the Better Business Bureau and check out the official court records in your local county clerk’s office," said Castillo.

He recommends you always check for their license online, take your time looking over any contracts and get several estimates for the work. But if you think you’re not getting what you paid for, Castillo suggests taking action.

"I definitely recommend filing a complaint with the attorney general’s office. They have a consumer fraud protection wing," said Castillo.

Court documents show victims paid tens of thousands in down payments or toward the pool they never received, and it can be a journey to try to get that money returned. Villarroel targeted victims in Broward, Collier, Hendry, Hillsborough, Lake, Miami-Dade, Orange, Osceola, Palm Beach, Pasco, Pinellas and Seminole counties.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the investigation uncovered that Villarroel teamed with licensed general contractor Luis Alvarez of Conquer Builders, who aided and abetted Villa Pavers and Pools to defraud homeowners throughout the state. The office said Alvarez sold the use of his general contractor license to Villa Pavers and Pools, an unlicensed contractor company, to present a contractor license to homeowners and obtain building permits.

Villarroel used the license repeatedly and hired two salespeople, Michael Borrego Fernandez and Laura Ballester Alpizar, to make deals, according to AG Ashley Moody. Alvarez, Borrego and Ballester are all in custody facing the same charges as Villarroel.

The Attorney General’s Office said Alvarez pled guilty to both charges with a sentence pending, and Borrego and Ballester are out on bond.

Ask Dr. Q - Summer 2024

“Ask Dr. Q.” gives OurSeniors readers a chance to get expert answers to specific senior-related health questions. Dr. Steven Quaning is Medical Director and Chief Physician at Metro Health, a network of medical practices dedicated to senior care. He is Board Certified in Geriatric Medicine, medical care specifically aimed at seniors. In our “Ask Dr. Q” feature, readers have an opportunity to get answers to specific senior medical questions. Here are some examples-

Q? How do APRNs benefit patients?

Answer. APRNs (Advanced Practice Registered Nurses) have completed extensive clinical training, making them well-qualified to provide basic medical care. There is a growing shortage of MDs, and these practitioners can fill the gap. Nurse practitioners are often more available than medical doctors, and you can typically get an appointment sooner. They often spend more time with you during your visit. This allows MDs to spend time dealing with more serious medical problems.

Treatment by APRNs gives the patient high-quality, lower cost, and quickly available medical care. MetroHealth is blessed to have a staff that includes both MDs and dedicated nurse practitioners.

Q? How important is better sleep to your health?

Answer. Few things are more important to good health than sleep. Prioritizing good sleep contributes significantly to your overall health and well-being. Insufficient or poor-quality sleep increases the risk of various health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, obesity, and dementia. Older adults still need the same amount of sleep, but unfortunately, sleep quality may decline with age. This makes it especially important for seniors to maintain good sleep habits. These habits include sticking to a consistent schedule (go to bed and get up at the same time each day.) Create a sleep-friendly environment by keeping your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool. Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows. Avoid heavy meals and caffeine before going to bed. Limit nap time to 20 or 30 minutes a day and get sufficient exercise. Try to turn off TV and computer screens an hour before bedtime. The blue spectrum of light from these screens disrupts your day/night balance. There is room for variance, but most sleep experts say that 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night are needed. If you sleep more or less, or if you are still tired after sleeping, talk to your doctor. He or she can check for conditions like sleep apnea and help get you into a better sleep pattern.

OurSeniors.org launches Operation Support OurSeniors.org

OurSeniors.org organization announces the launch of Operation Support OurSeniors.org. Operation Support OurSeniors.org is a fundraising campaign intended to help defray the costs associated with the many valuable services these organizations provide. OurSeniors.org is a 501 C (3) charitable organization and has been providing those services without charge for years. These benefits have been an invaluable aid to seniors and their families.

For years, OurSeniors has produced and distributed its printed and online publication, OurSeniors.Net Magazine, free of charge to readers and viewers. Senior readers have found inspiration, entertainment, and helpful practical information in the pages of this fine quarterly publication. Founder and President Julian G. Cantillo states, “OurSeniors mission is and will continue to be to serve OurSeniors, family, friends and caretakers.”

OurSeniors Lunch and Learn Event series has provided seniors with an opportunity to acquire useful and practical knowledge while socializing with peers. This socialization opportunity is an important element of its service to seniors. Along with the OurSeniors visitation program, it is an important part of the services provided to seniors. OurSeniors volunteers visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities in a continuing effort to prevent the feelings of isolation that can damage the physical and mental health of seniors.

One of OurSeniors’ most important activities is the maintenance of its association of vetted businesses and professional service providers. These individuals or organizations agree to adhere to a strict set of standards in dealing with seniors. They provide not only products, but also professional services like legal and medical practice. All these Approved Vendors agree to the OurSeniors Code of Ethics, insuring honest and fair dealings with seniors.

The services provided also include free newsletters, podcasts, and special discounts for readers. The bottom line is that the OurSeniors organization is a 501 C (3) whose purpose is to serve the needs of seniors in any way possible. Because of the increasing costs of providing these services, OurSeniors will not be able to continue free services without outside help.

Operation Support OurSeniors.org is a fund-raising event intended to preserve those free services to seniors. Seniors are the fastest growing demographic in the United States, and they face unmet needs and social challenges. OurSeniors.org is a charitable organization that steps in and fills the gap between seniors’ needs and their resources. Of course, contributions to Operation Support OurSeniors.org are tax deductible. All proceeds go to ensuring that OurSeniors publications and resources are free to the seniors who need them.

That is why we make this appeal. Patrons can help keep OurSeniors a viable, useful and free service to the senior community! Please help us continue this mission. Of course, donations made to 501 C (3) organizations like OurSeniors are tax deductible for the donors. So, give while you live! Dr. Benjamin Newman, A Truly Amazing Senior

People who go into medicine are generally motivated to help others. For the doctors and corpsmen of the U.S. Navy and Marines, this can be especially true. Often, they find themselves in dramatic situations where their aid can literally make the difference between life and death. During his 46 years of Navy service, Ben Newman was in several of those circumstances.

As a young man, Ben sometimes visited the Navy Yard in his native Philadelphia. Seeing those ships made him want to be a part of the team, and in 1962 he enlisted in the Navy as a medical student. Each summer, he spent 45 days on active duty as a medical officer in the Philadelphia Navy Hospital. After graduation, he joined Destroyer Squadron 2 on active duty and was soon on his way to D**g Ha Vietnam. It was the northernmost city in South Viet Nam, a focus of combat activity, and a rude awakening for a young doctor.

Nothing in his training had prepared Dr. Newman for this experience. He saw wounds from combat that would never be encountered in civilian practice. Early in his tour of duty, a young Marine who had stepped on a land mine arrived at the hospital. His foot, still in a boot, was held to his leg by just a piece of flesh. The attending doctor took it in hand, severed it with a knife, and threw it into a paper box.

Remembering the experience, Dr. Newman commented, “You are never the same after seeing something like that or someone dying. As the most junior guy there, I sometimes had to assign corpsmen to go out in the field with Marines. That was the worst job in the world because these guys might not come back. And a lot of them didn’t. You don’t forget that. I have a son who was a corpsman, and I am so proud.”

He quickly learned to respect and depend on the corpsmen at D**g Ha. Encountering combat, most people instinctively try to escape, but corpsmen run towards it. It is their job to be there when most needed, and many wounded soldiers owe their lives to these brave and skilled people.

In D**g Ha, his quarters were in a bunker, he ate only combat rations, and slept with his boots on, keeping one eye open for fear of being attacked during the night. He saw about 60 casualties every day. Duty hours were “as many hours as the job took.” Returning to the United States, Dr. Newman served stateside in Norfolk, VA at the Navy Clinic for one year.

Later, Ben separated from active duty but remained in the Navy Reserve. He opened a very successful private practice in Altamonte Springs, FL where he stayed for several years. He became associated with central Florida EMS and Emergency Rescue services, became a very competent helicopter pilot, and even got a commercial pilot’s license for fixed wing aircraft.

During that “quiet time,” he was called back to active duty in 1991 to participate in Operation Desert Storm, where he spent three months as the General Medical Officer for the Marines in Egypt and Kuwait. The oil fires were so thick that you could not see the sun. Many wounded Marines were treated in the field under the threat of Scud missile attack. The nights were bitterly cold, and the days were scorching hot.

That was a short duty tour, but in 1998 he left his Family Medicine Practice and returned to active duty, serving as the Senior Medical Officer with Navy Security Group Activity at Winter Harbor, Maine and then as Senior Medical Officer on the USS Bataan. Just hours after the September 11 attack, the Bataan deployed to the middle east to take part in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Following a seven-month deployment aboard the Bataan, Dr. Newman returned to the Portsmouth Navy Hospital and soon assumed the position of the Second Fleet Surgeon. He was responsible for overseeing the medical departments of approximately 126 ships and aircraft carriers. In 2007 he retired from the Navy, ushered out with a ceremony that included the Navy Marching Band. But his service was not quite over. On the day of his retirement party, he received a call from the Pentagon asking him to run the Navy Safe Harbor Program (later the Wounded Warriors Program) in Washington. In 2008, he had his second retirement after a lifetime of service to his country, the Navy and the countless soldiers and sailors he had helped.

This life story should inspire Americans young and old. Ben Newman could have spent his career in a safe, comfortable private medical practice. Instead, he chose a path that placed him in spots most of us would avoid. He was often deployed away from family for long periods and at considerable danger to himself. He goes out of his way to praise the skill, devotion, and courage of his corpsmen and fellow doctors.

After a 46-year career, CAPT Benjamin Newman, MD truly deserves the title, “Amazing Senior!” Thank you for your service, CAPT Newman.

Jesus’ Farewell Address

Provided by Andrew Wommack

Few moments in history carry as much weight and significance as Jesus’ final words to His disciples on the night of His arrest. As He faced the darkest hour of His earthly ministry and stood on the brink of His crucifixion, facing betrayal, agony, and death, His words to His disciples were filled with urgency and importance:

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

John 14:1

Jesus knew the disciples were about to face the greatest crisis of their lives, and He wanted to prepare them for it. It’s evident from the scriptural account that the disciples didn’t understand the Resurrection, even though Jesus had told them fourteen different times that He would be crucified. And seven of those fourteen times, He included that He would rise again on the third day. Still, this was not in the forefront of their minds.

From their perspective, it seemed that all the hopes they had pinned on Jesus as the Messiah—the one who would redeem Israel and deliver them from Roman occupation—were completely shattered. Consequently, not only were they spiritually affected, but their lives were in danger merely by association. You know, Scripture highlights that after Jesus was arrested, Peter denied Him three times. But it wasn’t only Peter who fled—all of the disciples forsook Jesus.

Maybe you find yourself in a crisis as you read this. It might even be an extremely critical situation in your marriage, business, or finances. There are many different types of challenging circumstances we can all face in life, and they can really seem overwhelming. While I don’t want to diminish whatever you might be going through, I truly believe it doesn’t compare to the crisis these disciples were dealing with. I know that’s a bold statement, but I believe it to be true.

Remember, they had pinned all of their hopes on Jesus. They’d given up everything, and now it seemed as if everything they had believed was a lie. They had left families, homes, businesses—they forsook it all, and without a backup plan. So, when Jesus was arrested, it looked like total failure. And on top of all that, their very lives were now in jeopardy. This was a major crisis situation.

I believe Satan knows where we’re vulnerable. He sometimes sees our weaknesses better than we do. Being a spiritual creature, he doesn’t just perceive things in the natural realm. I believe he saw that these disciples were the ones Jesus was entrusting His entire kingdom to and that Jesus was depending on them. And because of that, I believe Satan was throwing everything he had at them—depression, discouragement, fear, anything he could use to try to s***f these guys out. After all, they were the ones who would carry on the message Jesus had left with them. So, they likely faced demonic opposition during this time that few of us have ever experienced.

I share all of that to provide some background. Imagine yourself in the shoes of Jesus’ disciples, your heart heavy with apprehension as you confront all the uncertainties amidst all these events. And the very first thing Jesus says is to not let your heart be troubled. I tell you, that is just phenomenal.

Love is not emotionless, but it is a choice and a commitment that you make. So, the answer isn’t suppressing or venting your emotions. What you need to do is cast your cares over on the Lord and let God come in and heal your heart.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

1 Peter 5:7

There is an anointing on Jesus to heal broken hearts. We need to get to the place where even if we’re faced with death, we can’t help but praise God, knowing that heaven awaits.

Heads Up- Traditional Banks Are Going Away!

You have probably noticed that there are fewer and fewer bank branches. In fact, between 2017 and 2021, over 4,400 bank branches shut down permanently. At the height of the pandemic, many more were temporarily closed or offered only limited services. At some branches, it was necessary to make a special appointment to access a safe deposit box or conduct some other transactions.

The four-year period between 2017 and 2021 saw an acceleration in the branch closure trend that started in 2008. Most experts predict that this trend will continue in the coming years and neighborhood bank branches could all but disappear by 2034. Interestingly, Florida was the state with the largest number of bank closures in the last six years by a wide margin. Florida, a fast-growing market, lost 529 banks in that period, compared to runner up Illinois, a no-growth market, which lost 395. In many smaller communities, there is no physical bank at all.

This situation has a disproportionate effect on seniors, the demographic group whose members are most likely to have been sticking with the familiar banking practices of the past. Those habits are going to be more and more difficult to maintain as branches close. Even common transactions like a withdrawal, deposit or transfer are going to become harder if you are looking for an open branch or a human bank teller. Many branches are going to become simply drive-through lanes with sophisticated cash machines.

No one thinks that banks are going to completely go away, but the services they offer to individuals are going to be mainly “mobile,” “online” or “electronic.” This means that seniors must acquire the digital skills needed to navigate this new system. If you are going to remain in control of your personal affairs, this will become mandatory.

Younger seniors are likely to be prepared for this process. Today’s 60 or 65-year-old was a young adult at the dawn of the digital age. They began to use digital devices at work and in their personal lives years ago. However, for many seniors, the switch to online or mobile banking has seemed intimidating or frightening. A 2019 consumer study found that seniors aged 70 and older were far less likely to use these new banking services. While traditional banks or at least drive-through operations remained open, this was not a huge problem. The pandemic offered a preview of banking in the future; there will be fewer and fewer in-person contacts and help from human beings will be hard to find. Telephone helplines are often frustrating, operated by people in foreign countries who do not speak clearly.

The survey cited above found that seniors avoided digital banking for several reasons. These barriers included banking safety and security concerns, physical difficulty using mobile devices, a preference for in-person contact, and a lack of access to the internet. Real as these concerns are, seniors who want to stay in personal control of their financial affairs must overcome them.

Here are some tips to help seniors who are ready to take the leap into online and mobile banking-

First, be sure you have the right equipment. If you are having difficulty using cell phone keyboards or voice commands, look at computer tablets or good old-fashioned computers and laptops. They are easier to see and much easier to type with. Some seniors find dealing with the small screens and touch keys in cell phones difficult.

Start with a simple online or mobile task. Just establishing an online account with your bank is a good place to start. If this seems intimidating, have a friend guide you through the process. After this account is established, use it to do simple tasks like checking bank account balances. Repeat this several times before moving on to something like making transfers or paying a bill online. You do not have to jump in right away doing complicated things like investing online. Build familiarity one step at a time.

Use the educational resources available to you. All major banks offer online help, often in the form of videos that clearly explain how to do common transactions online. They may also offer information about taxes, rebates, financial literacy tools and ways to report suspected fraud immediately.

Last, don’t be afraid to ask for help. This should be rare, but if there is a problem that you just cannot solve, there is someone in a local branch who can help. Nowadays, it might require making an appointment in that branch, but it may be worth the trouble while branches are still open. Mastering online banking is about learning a new skill, something seniors should continue to do throughout life. Remember that everyone had to learn how to bank online at some point.

Thanks for reading our blog and patronizing our supporters. Come back to OurSeniors.Net frequently. We try hard to provide you with information that is both entertaining and useful.
