The SCM Story.... Socalmountains.com (SCM) went online in 2002 as an incident information and interaction portal for San Bernardino Mountain Communities. SCM experienced significant growth in 2003 due to the many large fires impacting Southern California. One of those fires (the Old Fire) ended with the evacuation of all mountain communities from Lake Arrowhead to Running Springs to Big Bear. SCM became one of the primary sources of information and communication during this incident. Since then SCM has been growing every year with new real-time features being added on a regular basis. As the leader in real-time information, SCM has become the goto site for fires, incidents, road conditions, and weather. SCM expanded into the Facebook realm in 2011 with limited cross posting between FB and its primary website. Over the past 18 months SCM has greatly expanded its Facebook integration and has developed custom software to interface the sites. Please note that due to how Facebook works, not all information and features are available like they are on the Socalmountains.com website. The Socalmountains.com website remains the real-time pulse of what is happening in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Over the years SCM has invested substantial time and money developing software for its real-time features. There are over 5000 lines of custom programming code that make SCM function as well as integrate with Facebook and mobile devices. SCM has also invested heavily into hardware in order to provide the functionality you see on both the website and Facebook sites. There are several scanner radios, standalone computers, servers, weather stations, cameras and other specialized hardware that is used to provide this real-time "state of the union". In 2018 our web cam network grew from 8 to 21 views available to us. Some of these cameras are SCM owned while others are contracted for our use. Some are public facing but many are private feeds.

SCM continues to add and improve its services. So far this year SCM has added a couple new and exciting features. CHP (California Highway Patrol) incidents have been integrated into our system in real-time and also update in real-time on the SCM website. A new alerting system went live in April that allows SCM members to pick and choose what incidents they want to be alerted for and how to be alerted (phone, email, sms, etc). We also have more exciting things planned for 2019 including a new SCM app for Android, a new radio scanner listening post at 8800 feet, and a firewatch network available to SCM members.

SCM is a non-profit organization that is funded by both advertising and donations. Since 2002, SCM has received just over 550 donations from 495 individuals.
