NAIA Conference Wrestlers of the Week (reposted with correct dates):

This week, we wanted to highlight strong performances from unranked competitors at their conference (The Open Mat rankings). Maybe these guys didn’t all win their conferences, but they had to knock off stiff competition to earn their way into the national tournament.

Congrats to the 280 wrestlers who made it to the final step to earning AA/National Champion honors.

And to those that didn’t make it, respect goes to you as well. We see the work, the sacrifice, the dedication that goes into this sport. 99% of us will fall short of our ultimate goals. This is the way of the sport.

Vantage/Portillo Bros Wrestlers of the Week:

Randy Frailey had one of the best performances in the Wolverine-Hoosie Conference tournament, winning the bracket and securing his spot at nationals.

And quite a few of NAIA women got some top-10 wins!

What 2 Watch this week!

We get our first taste of post-season action as NJCAA begins their national qualification process with districts this weekend. The North Central district is always loaded, sending majority of their wrestlers to nationals.

Only one NAIA conference starts this weekend but it will be a good one. The WHAC conference is not whack as it is led by 3 teams in the top-25 and many other teams with hammers of their own.

What about the duals? The Wildcat Duals will feature many great NAIA Women’s teams. Many teams will wrap up their dual season with some of their toughest competitions of the year!

Let’s enjoy these last few weeks of college wrestling season!

The Grand View Open for Women was full of expected chaos, and two different types of Vikings impressed on their ways to titles. Grand View Viking Krista Warren was unranked and won 143, while Carl Albert State Viking Lexi Miller won 109.

We got ourselves an NAIA Super Match when Keller Rock bumped up and took out #2 at 174.

And we can’t avoid mentioning high school freshman Taina Fernandez any longer. She has won three college opens already and just took out the #1 NCAA athlete at her weight.

NJCAA National Duals went down last weekend, so many great performances to highlight from there!

The Delaware Valley women’s team was started in 2019 and began competing in 2021. They honored their first class of seniors this week, and senior Bridgette Schoultz’s 20-second pin was a poetic ending in her home gym.

There was also a handful of upsets in D2 with a few top-10 foes taking losses.

What 2 Watch this week:

Oh, you thought the dual tournaments were done after this last weekend? Wrong! NJCAA has their version of national duals this Friday, with 10 ranked dual teams and 4 of the top 5. Tiffin hosts the DII Super Region 3 Duals on Saturday with 6 ranked dual teams.

The Budd Whitehill Duals feature 5 ranked DIII dual teams. And the Virginia Duals will have flavor from 5 different divisions.

If tournaments are more of your thing to watch, check out the Mike Duroe Invite, the Tornado Open, or the York Invite!

There’s also plenty of individual duals to keep you busy the coming weekdays. We will see 9 different top-ten battles across all divisions. Buckle up for the week and enjoy!

Your first Vantage Wrestlers of the Week of 2024!

We just started the second semester of wrestling just a few weeks ago and we are already off with a bang with upsets from across all divisions of men’s and women’s wrestling.

Thomas More isn’t eligible for the DII postseason until next year, but that doesn’t mean they are wasting their time this year. Daulton Mayer shined this weekend at Midlands, placing 5th at the tournament with three pins, one decision, and one major. Mayer was also the only no-DI wrestler to place at Midlands this year.

Ethan Spacht (North Central) is currently behind DIII #2 ranked Christian Guzman. But the freshman notched one of the biggest wins of the weekend when he took out #15 in DI, Jett Strickenberger of West Virginia.

On the women’s side, Henlee Haynes (Presbyterian) has been off to a great start to her college career. She avenged one of her only prior losses in the Midlands semifinals winning 6-4 over the #4 in the nation, thanks to a big 4-point move right off the bat in the match.

Sophomore Katelyn Lewis (Providence) had one of the better tournaments at Soldier Salute. On her way to the finals, she pinned not one, not two, but three different ranked opponents. Despite falling in the finals to a tough Haley Ward (Iowa), her performance was still one of the best of the weekend.

The wrestler of stood out the most at the Citrus Invitational was Patrick McGraw of John Carroll. McGraw took out two ranked wrestlers on his way to the finals. He started off meeting #5 in DIII in the semifinals where McGraw won 13-4, a major decision. In the finals, he took out #8 in DII by a 12-6 win. McGraw is now the all-time wins leader for John Carroll with over 125 career wins and he still has about two months to add to that number.

The last Vantage Wrestlers of the Week of 2023!

At the Midwest Classic, three people had superb runs to take over the #1 spot in the nation and win a title. Gabe Hixenbaugh beat both returning national finalists at 133. David Hunsberger took out the returning national champion to win 165. Isaiah Vance won a 285 bracket that included 7 of the top-ten at the time.

Blake Gonzalez became the first and only non-D1 guy to win the Reno TOC, with his best wins coming over Gabe Willochel of Wyoming and Willie McDougald of Oklahoma, both top-25 in the nation in DI.

At Senior Nationals, McKendree’s true freshman Shelby Moore placed 3rd and qualified for the Olympic Team Trials. She had two huge wins over collegiate national champions, both of whom were on the P4P list according to The Open Mat.

Many Phoenix’s rose up the rankings at the Rocky Top Duals. Cumberland rose up to #6 in the dual rankings. Jared Dinh beat two projected All-Americans at 141, Victor Guzman beat the #11 guy in the nation to help them beat Reinhardt, and Eli Clemmons teched the #11 guy at 165.

We wanted to name someone who characterized heart and resilience this past weekend. Kyle Knudston lost his first match in Reno to a very tough NJCAA finalist Darion Johnson by tech. He responded to this adversity by pinning two guys and teching two guys. Then, he was pitted against Johnson on the backside and he flipped the script with an 8-7 win, thus reaching his match limit. For making huge adjustments mid-tournament and staying mentally focused, Knudston wins the Heart Award for the week.

New DII women’s program Adams State may have their first star on their hands. 116 Austria Holland beat a former All-American at the Desert Duals who was ranked #11 and has a past win over the #9 at 109. She hasn’t lost a match yet this year as a true freshman.

As usual, there will be some great action this upcoming week! The NAIA dual rankings, only by , will certainly be shaken up at the NAIA Challenge Duals! Reinhardt is coming off of a huge win over Southeastern, but many of these teams haven’t been tested much in duals yet. 5 in the top-20, and 2 in the top-20, including sleeper teams such as Lourdes and Rio Grande should make for a great weekend of NAIA action.

The North Central Open should be equally as exciting, for men and women. Many times, this open can be harder to place at than nationals. 5 top-10 D3 men’s teams will be there, including Augsburg and UW-Lacrosse, the top two teams. For the women, there will be twelve ranked teams in total. Top-ranked NCAA North Central is joined by top-ranked NJCAA Iowa Central. This could be a big chance to see how well the McKendree team is really doing and if all of their pieces are in place to contend for a national title. Of note, Iowa is only sending a few unattached wrestlers.

The following weekdays will see some fire duals. It is hard to pick a favorite dual of the week but it will definitely happen on Wednesday night. Two top-5 D3 teams clash in a battle for Wisconsin. La Crosse vs. Eau Claire will be worth the watch. That same night, tune into a tri-meet between #2 Life, #9 Reinhardt, and #19 UNC-Pembroke. The Life vs. Reinhardt dual was crazy last year, and it only gets better with Pembroke in the mix.

Other women’s dual action to keep your eyes on is the Trojan Duals, hosted by Mount Olive, the #14 NCAA team. Their toughest challenge will be #3 King.
