NEWPORT: on Audrain Heritage Restaurant Group acquisition of Red Parrot restaurant, which continues a trend of the billionaire's firm purchasing entertainment properties:

Between acquisition of restaurants by a narrow field of owners and a short-term rental mess, Newport is becoming more and more of what used to be known as a "company town", save for employee housing.

The city, vibrant with creatives and a working class population as recently as a decade ago, has dramatically shifted to an investment portfolio for a handful of proprietors, appearing more like Walt Disney World than a dynamic small city.

Long post re: Hasbro seeking new headquarters in Boston area, leaving Rhode Island:

Firms like Hasbro want a workforce of creatives, MBA/MPA leaders with experience across a variety of new media and design projects. But, with an ongoing housing crisis, even with a well-trained recent grad population, that workforce is almost impossible to retain in Rhode Island.

Ideally, Hasbro would be incentivized to become an anchor of the “Innovation District” on the 195 land in Providence, perhaps spurring additional creative/design/tech/new media firms to set up shop in the area. But, without housing, it is a waste of time and energy to pursue.

Rhode Island should be Austin/Chattanooga on steroids. Acela corridor. Beautiful landscape. Smart, caring population. But it will not be without massive reform in housing, education, healthcare and transit.

While tax incentives for large firms have a sticker shock and perception problem, they can true out to deliver transformational change to an economy.

Instead of thinking about a longterm acceleration of a new media economy, we have invested TIF/other incentives into amusement projects, particularly Tidewater Landing, a minor league soccer stadium, that, while fun and potentially a ROI, is far from the economic investment we need.
