As we head into 2024, farm operations are coming off a mixed profit year in 2023; with some farmers having fairly good profit levels last year, while others had much more modest results in 2023. In all cases, all farm operators are facing much tighter profit margins for crop and livestock production in 2024, as compared to recent years. During these changing farm financial times, it is good to plan ahead before meeting with an ag lender for renewal of a farm operating line of credit or for an annual review of the farm financial portfolio.

Following are some tips for farm operators to be more proactive, as they are preparing for an annual meeting with their ag lender:

Prepare an up-to-date 2023 year-end farm balance sheet (as of 12-31-23 or 1-01-24).
Preparation of an accurate and up-to-date year-end balance sheet is critical to the loan renewal process for any farm operation. Updating the previous year’s balance sheet with current year-end numbers can help expediate the process. If the farm operation is a sole proprietorship, most ag lenders will also want personal asset and liability data included. If it is a partnership or family corporation, most ag lenders will also require personal balance sheets from all partners.
A good year-end balance sheet will include:

13/01/2024

Kansas State University veterinarian Gregg Hanzlicek said being prepared ahead of calving season is the best way for producers to assure they will bring home the newborn calves successfully.

“We’re approaching the end of the second trimester and moving into the third trimester which means the metabolic demands of that cow or heifer are going to increase tremendously,” Hanzlicek said.

A key to having a successful calving and production season is for cows and heifers to be in the appropriate body condition, which according to Hanzlicek is a score of 5-7. He said he has seen many cattle in the 3-4 range in the past few months.

“We’re far enough away from calving that we can add condition to these cows and heifers without (creating) an economic burden,” he said. “It really comes down to having a formulated ration that is balanced for protein and energy.”

For those wanting to add scour vaccines to their prevention program, “it’s time to decide what vaccine they are going to use,” Hanzlicek said. “Look at the label and schedule on the calendar when they need to start vaccinating the cows and heifers.”

Hanzlicek said heifers will require two doses of the scours vaccine, while cows need one. The timing of those vaccines is “very, very important,” he said.

Also, Hanzlicek recommends establishing a clean calving area to help reduce the risk of scours. “There’s two major risk factors for scours,” he said. “One is the lack of colostrum consumption. The other is a contaminated environment that the babies are born into.”

Dogs are everywhere. From busy cities to sparsely populated towns you can find “man’s best friend.” The farm is no exception. Dogs can be found happily cruising in the back of pick-up trucks, inspecting barnyards, or dutifully protecting the farmhouse. One of roles that dogs have played in agriculture is helping farmers and ranchers herd livestock. Read on to learn a little bit about the history of some famous herding dog breeds.

To begin, dogs have been used in agricultural capacities for thousands of years. Ancient Mesopotamians used dogs for guard purposes and later the Ancient Greeks and Romans used dogs for guarding livestock and hunting. Dogs also appear in artwork and written sources in ancient Egypt, China, India, and Mesoamerica, though not always in agricultural uses.

As time went on dogs continued to be used for various needs and were bred in specific ways to fulfill certain needs. In the field of agriculture droving and herding became jobs that dogs fulfilled. Droving dogs helped move livestock from fields to markets. Working from the back of flocks, these dogs helped handlers keep big herds of livestock moving throughout the course of their journeys. Breeds like the Rottweiler and the Old English Sheepdog originated to serve this purpose. Herding dogs were faster and more agile and used to help corral and move cattle or sheep that could be scattered over acres of land on a farmer’s property.

While there are many herding breeds to choose from, below are brief histories of three recognizable herding dog breeds.

Biosensing engineer Azahar Ali, assistant professor of animal sciences and biological systems engineering at Virginia Tech, is bracing for the arrival of a fourth agricultural revolution.

It’s an era predicted to tap into the transformative potential of the connective technologies that have arisen in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. To Ali, three technologies stand out for their potential to advance climate-smart, precision agriculture: wearable agriculture sensors, Internet of Things-enabled — or “smart” — devices, and artificial intelligence (AI).

In a review article published by Advanced Intelligent Systems, Ali and colleagues Matin Ataei Kachouei of the School of Animal Sciences and Ajeet Kaushik of Florida Polytechnic University wrote that merging these cutting-edge technologies could create a paradigm shift in how the agricultural sector monitors food safety and quality and plant health and productivity worldwide.

For Ali, prioritizing rapid, accurate, early monitoring will be critical to sustainably and safely feeding the fast-growing global population, which is expected to be nearly 10 billion by 2050 and will require 50 percent more food to maintain the world’s food supply chain, according to the article.

According to the 2023 Global Agricultural Productivity, or GAP, Report, released through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the growth of global agricultural productivity has significantly contracted and current efforts to sustainably expand production are inadequate.

When Dorothy Soo-Wiens and Erwin Wiens, organizers of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s Christmas tractor parade, teamed up with Joe Pillitteri to cap off his annual fundraiser for cancer research, little did they know the depth of the generosity they would witness.

In total, they managed to collect more than $100,000 from attendees and supporters of the tractor parade on Dec. 14 — surpassing their goal of $15,000.

Pillitteri, co-owner of Lakeview Vineyard Equipment, heads up Team Pillsy, which participates annually in NOTL’s Terry Fox Run, raising tens of thousands of dollars every year for cancer research via the Terry Fox Foundation. 2023’s campaign started in late August.

He was overwhelmed by the support from the community during that December evening in Virgil, as the people who were gathered on the street to watch the parade chipped in what they had for the cause.

“Just walking along the side of the road, I think we collected $5,000,” Pillitteri said. “People were chasing (the collectors) wanting to donate, which was incredible.”

09/01/2024

While most consumers will have popped champagne to ring in the new year, 2024 will be a time to watch trends in wine and winemaking. The art of wine grape growing and winemaking is full of history and tradition, yet it is constantly innovating and evolving through science.

Amit Dhingra, Ph.D., head of the Department of Horticultural Sciences in Texas A&M’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, shares upcoming trends in the wine industry for the new year.

Wine trends rising as far as the eye can see
The wine industry is booming across the country, and Dhingra said the connection between wine and agritourism is expected to spark increased consumption of domestic and Texas-made wines.

Texas is seeing major growth in the wine industry, due to market changes and an influx of people in the state, he said.

“More people are moving into different regions across Texas,” Dhingra said. “And wine consumption is increasing in these places.”

Sustainability practices improving winemaking
On a global scale, there is a large push in the wine industry for winemakers to practice sustainability. With new, niche developments in the winemaking process to bring out flavors and aromas, Dhingra said sustainable practices will be driven by innovation.

08/01/2024

Crop damage in agriculture and the transmission of vector-borne diseases by insect pests have become worldwide threat nowadays. Chemical treatments such as insecticides and repellents have been a major strategy against insect pests for centuries. Due to limited understanding of mechanisms of insect avoidance behavior, however, development of insect repellents has been delayed. To discover compounds that effectively repel insect pests, it is important to focus on key molecules associated with sensory, particularly aversive, responses. In this study, researchers identified a compound that induces robust aversive responses through multiple sensory pathways in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster.

✳️Reminder: Agriculture Tax Exemption Holders Need to Renew Their Numbers Now✳️

Renewal only rolls around once every four years, so the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is reminding all agriculture producers that the Agricultural and Timber Exemption numbers they currently hold will expire on Dec. 31.

You must renew your number to continue to claim an exemption on qualifying agriculture and timber purchases made after that date. The Comptroller’s Office mailed out renewal letters in August, but if the renewal hasn’t been completed, the time is short.

“This is one of those housekeeping items that is easy to overlook,” said Tiffany Lashmet, J.D., AgriLife Extension agriculture law specialist, Amarillo. “Everyone involved in agriculture in Texas should take the time to ensure they have updated their Agricultural and Timber Exemption registration numbers so they do not run into any issues in the new year.”

Agriculture and timber producers in Texas are exempt from paying sales taxes on certain items used exclusively to produce agriculture and timber products, Lashmet said. Tractors, seed, fertilizer and medication for livestock are all examples of items exempt from sales tax for producers with a valid agriculture and timber exemption number.

05/01/2024

Holiday greenery and Christmas trees bring joy throughout the season, but they can also hide dangerous pests. Diseases and invasive species can make their way into our landscapes on trees and boughs brought into Minnesota from other states.

To protect our environment, the State of Minnesota is asking residents to take these steps to properly dispose of greenery and trees after the holiday season:

The best option is to use a curbside tree collection or bring trees to a designated drop-off site. Check with your waste hauler, city, or county to see what services are offered in your area. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has a map of yard waste compost locations; contact locations directly to see if they accept trees and greenery.
Do not toss trees and greenery into your backyard woods or residential compost pile, which can spread the invasive species or disease.
Wreaths and other decorative greens can be disposed of in trash cans.
If your city or county does not have an organized pick-up or drop-off, the last resort is to burn the greens. Always check fire danger conditions and burning restrictions before burning and follow local ordinances.

03/01/2024

Gardening isn’t usually the first thing that springs to mind when the calendar page turns to January. But with the holidays behind us, there’s no better time to start planning and preparing our spring gardens.

Of course, that will mean different things in different places. It’s impossible to account for every microclimate in every region, but frost – or lack thereof – is the defining characteristic that should guide gardeners over winter.

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW
In regions where frosts and freezes are common, gardeners should monitor for heaving, the lifting of plant roots and bulbs out of the soil resulting from the season’s freeze-thaw cycles. Pushed up out of the ground, even ever so slightly, they become vulnerable to exposure and could die.

Take periodic walks around beds and borders and push heaved roots back into the ground with your foot, then apply a few inches of protective mulch over them.

Keep off the grass. Walking on frozen or muddy lawns can injure grass and damage soil structure, which is difficult to repair.

'Tis the Season! We like getting in the Christmas sprit around here!

Meet Margaret!

My favorite Christmas memory... Well, back in the day, I had Jersey cows. My cow Annabell had a calf right before Christmas, but it was a bull, which we named Jingle Balls. So, right before Christmas, my dad went to the local auction and got a beef calf that I could raise with my Jersey bull. I named her Clarice after Rudolph's girlfriend. I still have Clarice, she is one of my favorite Christmas gifts!

My favorite Christmas movies are Annabell's Wish (reason for naming my cow Annabell) and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

What do I want for Christmas... Calf-Tel hay rack for calf pens.

'Tis the Season! We like getting in the Christmas sprit around here!

Meet Kyle!

As for the questions, favorite Christmas memory is when my family would gather on Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house for a big meal and to open presents, and then we would go from there over to our church for a Christmas Eve candlelight service. My brothers and I still do a version of that every year, although now that our grandparents and parents are gone, we gather on Christmas Eve at one of our houses.

My favorite Christmas movie is The Ref. It’s more of a movie set during Christmas, but it does have an underlying theme of a family coming back together during Christmastime, and it is darn funny in the process.

What I want for Christmas is a hard one, because as an adult and a parent, what I enjoy most about Christmas is what I get for my kids and how much they enjoy those gifts. So what I always want for Christmas is my kids at home and a nice time with them opening presents and enjoying each others’ company.

'Tis the Season around here!!

Today is a little different, while we are going to highlight Kate we are also celebrating Kate's BIRTHDAY!!

Kate's Birthday Memory - However, one birthday always sticks out in my mind—and that was my 8th birthday.

I was in 2nd grade, the last day of school before winter vacation–the 21st of December. After a classroom holiday party, we went to the library. I was sitting at the big table in the center of the room. Positioned on the corner, I was reading my book and realized there seemed to be a lot of murmuring around me.

As I looked up to figure out what was going on, the entire library sang Happy Birthday as a clown walked toward me with a big bouquet of balloons.

I was so surprised. So I sat there and cried. Yes, I really did. 🙂

When the clown made it over to me and handed me the balloons, I didn’t want them, so I gave them back like they were hot potatoes. I looked at the library doorway, where my favorite 2nd cousin Sally and my parents stood.

They were confused and tried to smile as they sang the rest of the song. And the poor clown was just left hanging.

Needless to say, it was a complete disaster, and no one ever surprised me again. They were afraid I would cry! And probably before the age of 20 I would have.

Kate's favorite Christmas movie- It's a Wonderful Life

What does Kate want for Christmas Tree - Peace on Earth
