We lost another senior friend in Nampa yesterday. Born on October 7, 1914, Esther Michaelis was most likely Idaho's oldest living resident when she died at 109. She was a grade school and Sunday school teacher in Nampa for years. This was a photo we took of Esther for her Milestone picture in Senior Goldmine at the young age of 104.

We lost three friends of Senior Goldmine last week. Forsee Mower, Nampa, was 103, one of the more than 50 Idaho centenarians we have had the privilege of knowing and celebrating in the last 13+ years. Dixie Steen, Melba, was 96 and one of the first friends we met in our monthly visits to the Melba Valley-Senior Center. Walt Schoen, Eagle, was 96 and a familiar friendly face at both the Eagle and Star Senior Centers. We'll miss them all.

Ironically, I got the inspiration for my senior focused newsletter, Senior Goldmine, when I was in a Boise coffee shop reading a cheesy little table-top paper called "Coffee News." That was 14 years ago and we've been loving on seniors ever since. I guess you could say Senior Goldmine is my "coffee" in this story.

My favorite Veteran's Day story!!

RETURN VISIT
An 83-year-old Army veteran arrived in Paris by plane for a vacation with his family. As he was fumbling in his bag for his passport a stern French customs agent asked if he had been to France before.

He replied that he had indeed been to France before. The agent sarcastically said, “Then you should know to have your passport out and ready for me, sir!”

The old veteran replied calmly, “I didn’t have to show it the last time I was here.”

“Impossible!!” the customs agent said. “All foreigners have always had to show a passport to enter France!”

This time the man leaned over and responded in a whisper, “Well, when I came ashore on D-Day in 1944, I couldn’t find a single Frenchman to show it to!”

OUR SPOOKY OCTOBER COVER STORY:
While this story sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale or an episode of the Twilight Zone, it’s reported to be true. You be the judge.

An Ohio businessman on a sales trip, Saul Rubins, had his car break down on Louisiana Hiway 57, just outside of Dulac, a little town in the bayou country of Louisiana. The night was pitch dark in the middle of a raging thunderstorm. Saul abandoned his disabled vehicle on the side of the road and attempted to hitchhike.
Time passed slowly and no cars went by. It was raining so hard he could hardly see his hand in front of his face.
Suddenly, through the sheets of rain, he saw a car moving slowly down the road toward him, its dim headlights appearing ghostlike in the rain. It slowly and silently crept toward him and stopped.
Desperately needing a ride, Saul jumped in the back seat of the car and closed the door. Only then did he realize that there was no one behind the wheel and no sound of an engine to be heard over the rain. The driver’s side window was open and rain was pouring in.
The car continued to creep silently forward and Saul was terrified, too scared to think of jumping out and running. He saw that the car was approaching a sharp curve and, still too scared to jump out, he started to pray and beg for his life. He was sure the ghost car would go off the road and into the bayou and he would drown!
But just before the curve, a shadowy hand appeared at the driver’s window, reached in and turned the steering wheel, guiding the car safely around the bend. Then, just as silently, the hand disappeared through the window and Saul was alone again.
Paralyzed with fear, Saul watched the hand reappear every time they reached a curve.
Finally, scared nearly to death, Saul had all he could take, jumped out of the car, and ran into town. Soaking wet and in shock, he found his way into a roadside pub.
Voice quavering, he ordered two cups of coffee, black, and then told everybody within earshot about his supernatural experience.
The room became silent and everybody got goosebumps when they realized Saul was telling the truth and not just some drunk off the street.
About 30 minutes later, Claude and Gerardo, dripping wet, walked into the pub. Claude says, “Look, Gerardo, there’s that idiot dat rode in our car when we was pushin’ it in the rain.”

We lost another dear friend this week. Helen Shaffer, 95, was one of the first persons we met greeting us at the front desk of the Caldwell Senior Center when we first took Senior Goldmine there in 2011. I made a point to go to her table first every month for the past 12 years because I knew her smile and joyful spirit would make my day. Man, I'm going to miss her!

WIFE (upon greeting just-deceased husband):
"Welcome to Heaven, dear. I've been waiting for you!"

HUSBAND: "I could have been here 5 years earlier if you hadn't made me eat all that oat bran!"
