Several researchers in the Midwest have conducted cover crop research over the past several years, using cereal rye and forage radish, which is the dominant cover crop mix in North Dakota. They have found that there is no N credit from the use of these cover crops.

Most information on cover crops in books and even from some farmer speakers indicates low carbon-to-nitrogen ratios mean nitrogen will be released to the cover crop. But some research North Dakota State University Extension is finding otherwise.

No-Tiller Ray McCormick showcases his unique planter set up in this Conservation Ag Update.

It’s been a wet growing season for many of you, including no-tiller Ray McCormick in southwestern Indiana, where a heavy downpour May 14 drowned about 80% of his corn in a 250-acre field and set back his growing season ever since.

Plants have been shown to “forage” for nitrogen (N) in low-N conditions, growing longer primary and lateral roots in order to find nutrients in the surrounding area. However, this foraging action has been the least understood N-dependent root response — until now.

New study sheds light on previously-unknown hormone pathway, possibly paving the way to the development of crop varieties that use nitrogen more efficiently.

Chris Perkins' planter has hydraulic downforce, AutoPath and a 2-by-2-by-2 setup that allows for precise fertilizer placement. And he also has chains on his planter, which he says have some pros and cons but ultimately deliver ROI in more ways than one.

Chris Perkins, who lives about 40 miles east of Ray McCormick, calls his John Deere 1775 ExactEmerge planter a cheat code. It’s helped him break the 300-bushel barrier multiple times. The 2024 Strip-Till Innovator Award recipient’s planter has hydraulic downforce, AutoPath and a 2-by-2-by-2 setu...

Insignum AgTech has begun a collaboration with researchers in Purdue University’s College of Agriculture and College of Engineering to create tools for farmers to identify early stages of tar spot disease outbreaks in their corn plants.

The Census of Agriculture shows U.S. cropland area planted to cover crops in 2022 was 17,985,831 acres. That means cover crops were planted on 4.7% of total cropland in 2022. Why is adoption of cover crops so low? Why haven’t we reached 50% instead of 5%?

My question today is, if cover crops are so good, why don’t more farmers like them?

In 1972, paraquat was the No. 1 burndown herbicide. While it has lost much of its popularity to glyphosate, Mark Loux says it is one of those herbicides that could have been used more in recent years to help control marestail & interrupt the continuous glyphosate use cycle.

When we launched No-Till Farmer in 1972, paraquat was the No. 1 burndown herbicide. While it has lost much of its popularity to glyphosate, Mark Loux says it is one of those herbicides (marketed as Gramoxone by Syngenta) that could have been used much more in recent years to help control marestail a...

Tar spot is a condition blamed on a fungal infection of Phyllachora maydis and has been known to cause yield losses of up to 60 bushels per acre in untreated fields. These fungal fruiting structures interfere with photosynthesis.

At least 11 states in the U.S. have confirmed reports of tar spot in corn, according to the Crop Protection Network.

Using a roller crimper to terminate cereal rye immediately ahead of planting allows the rye maximum time to grow. The residue from rye seeded at 100-120 pounds per acre takes the place of a residual herbicide in soybeans.

Mr. No-Till is what one farm magazine called my grandfather, Stanley, in a 1991 article. He got our Cedar Hill, Mo., operation started in the practice at the urging of his father in the early ’80s.

Watertown, Wis., no-tiller Tony Peirick shows how he plants corn into green cereal rye, starting with emergent cereal rye in spring, the same rye a few months later, planting corn into living cereal rye, rolling terminated rye after planting, and side dressing corn with the rye still serving as armor for the soil.

As soybean moves through vegetative growth into the reproductive phases, it is very common to note that a field appears "uneven," with variable stands. When you see this, you probably ask whether this is due to something biotic, abiotic, or another issue?

It's important to look closely and determine what may be causing issues with soybeans, especially if it is due to a soybean stem disease.

The Greens started no-tilling soybeans almost 25 years ago but continued to conventionally till corn up until 2019 when Kris fully transitioned to strip-till with corn. The conservation practices are helping solve their two biggest challenges — soil erosion and labor shortages.
