His live concert engineering for artists such as Keith Jarrett, Oregon, Pat Metheny, Jimmy Smith, McCoy Tyner, Prairie Home Companion, etc. has taken him to such iconic venues as Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Opera House, Tanglewood, Avery Fisher Hall (Lincoln Center,) the Newport Folk Festival, and Boston’s Symphony Hall. In addition to his engineering expertise, Chas also plays keyboards with the internationally known pop-jazz group Kilimanjaro. Chas helped record and produce the first two Kilimanjaro records, which each charted at #3, and #5 in the country respectively for national radio airplay in the early 1980's, winning them two INDIE Awards, in the process. In 2009 Kilimanjaro released it's first CD in almost 25 years, entitled "Homecoming." Jazziz Magazine picked "Homecoming" as their "Critic's Choice - Best CDs of 2009," along with the likes of Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, and Branford Marsalis. With Kilimanjaro, Chas has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Newport Jazz Festival (twice), the Roskilde Festival, in Copenhagen, the Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia, The Atlanta Jazz Festival, The Yuroslav Jazz Festival, in the Soviet Union, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, (while performing with blues great, Paul Butterfield) and has toured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and The Soviet Union. He has also co-produced and toured with singer-songwriter Elisabeth von Trapp, and has performed with her at such prestigious venues as the National Cathedral, in Washington D.C., St. As keyboardist for the popular Unknown Blues Band featuring Big Joe Burrell, Chas also performed at the Utrecht Blues Festival, in The Netherlands. He also backed such blues icons as Marva Wright, W.C. Clark, and Kenny Neal, with the other members of Kilimanjaro. That led to a three month national tour with the legendary bluesman, Paul Butterfield. In 1992 Chas built a state of the art recording studio in Charlotte, Vermont that became known for it’s high quality audio recording, mastering, and music production services. In 2005, ethnomusicologist, Jacob Edgar, and his wife, purchased the property, and built a satellite office for the World Music label, Putumayo Records in a large converted barn adjacent to the Vermont studio. Today, the studio continues to be operated by Chas' former engineer, Lane Gibson. In 2010, Chas opened a studio on his property in a coastal village in Mexico.

I had a great time recording , Asleep At the Wheel co-founder, Leroy Preston's vocals for the band's upcoming 50th Anniversary CD! Wishing you guys luck, with the CD and the national tour, though you hardly need it at this point!! Special thanks to Lane Gibson Recording and Mastering!

Grammy award winning songwriter and founding member of legendary western swing band Asleep At The Wheel, LeRoy Preston,(center) has entered into a publishing administration agreement with Schubert Music U.S. for a new project. Along with his long list of AATW titles, his songs have been recorded by Roseanne Cash, K.D. Lang, Los Lobos, and Marshall Crenshaw among others. Leroy is a writer of several classic hits including the AATW title ‘Bump, Bounce Boogie’.

LeRoy comes to Schubert by way of our Nashville rep, Dave Durocher, who as VP of Bug Music Nashville represented Preston's work for many years in addition to such legacy artists as Johnny Cash.

Asleep at the Wheel have had a busy year during lockdown, recording 19 tracks for a new project to be released in October 2021 in celebration of their fifty one years together making great music.

Our Story

Chas Eller has been in the recording industry for over 40 years. During that time he has recorded or produced hundreds of LP's and CD's for numerous independent and major record labels, and in the process has received three INDIE Awards for his recording production work, and engineered two GRAMMY nominated projects.

As a studio and location recording engineer, Chas has worked with artists such as Dr. John, Taj Mahal, Bonnie Raitt, They Might Be Giants, Shawn Colvin, Stewart Copeland (The Police), Doc Watson, Odetta, Phish, Joe Lovano, Trey Anastasio, Grace Potter, Richard Thompson, Dave Van Ronk, Jerry Douglas, The Concord String Quartet, The Emerson String Quartet, and many more. In 1988 he recorded all three stages, and co-produced a two hour radio special of the Newport Folk Festival, for National Public Radio.

His live concert engineering work with artists such as Ray Charles, Keith Jarrett, Larry Carlton, Pat Metheny, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Smith, McCoy Tyner, Oregon, Prairie Home Companion, and more, has taken him to some of the top venues in the world, such as Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Opera House, Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center, Tanglewood, The Academy of Music, Philadelphia, and Boston’s Symphony Hall, to name a few.

In addition to his engineering expertise, Chas plays keyboards with the internationally known pop-jazz group Kilimanjaro. Chas recorded and produced the first two Kilimanjaro records, which each made it into the "Top Five" on the National Jazz Radio Airplay Charts in the early 80's. That led to three U.S. tours, as well as prestigious concert dates throughout Europe.
