Do you love what you sell? Yeah.. .. it almost sounds like a trick question. But really - do you really really like the product you sell, and do you believe it to be a great benefit to customers who use it the way it was intended? If no, you need to get another product to promote, or get out of the business altogether. They have a name for people who sell products they would never sell to a friend or family member. The term 'Shill' comes to mind, but that is not the exact definition, since you are actually affiliated to the company of said product. Salespeople often get a bad rep for promoting products or services that are not what the client expects them to be, due to improper/confusing marketing or simply not being familiar enough with the industry to know what it needs. I've been fortunate enough to work for some wonderful companies that created solutions to common industry problems. When I sold a product to a customer, they almost always became a friend. So much so, that when I started Compass Studios, I was able to go back over 15 years (spanning two corporations servicing different verticals) and offer our voice over service for IVR and marketing to old contacts, but with a different product. . Take good care of your clients and help them solve the issues they have today, and you may find that you'll be enjoying a working relationship a lot longer than what you have with your current employer.

Attended one of those local networking groups the other night. It was interesting and certainly a much different mood from the last few I had checked out a few years ago. Folks were upbeat, excited about the services they offer along with a willingness to 'keep an eye out' for business opportunities for others. If you are a small business and/or self employed, find out about the networking groups near you.. you might find an opportunity in the mix or at least be able to encourage a new startup.

What was your earliest memory relating to your chosen career?

Mine was when my dad brought one of these early reel to reel tape recorders home from his job at Motorola.
I was all over it from the moment he showed me how to hit 'play' and then foolishly left it out.

His sales reports and letters were quickly replaced with with man-on-the scene reporting from the back yard, home-made sound effects, along with in depth interviews with the refrigerator.

I was 5 years old and the magic of reel to reel recorders is still with me.
