LIGHTNING RISK FOR SATURDAY

27/07/2024

A lingering backdoor front will maintain cloudy conditions with scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout this evening. As high pressure moves in from the north, the area will experience cooler, drier weather over the weekend. The likelihood of thunderstorms will rise early next week with the approach of another front.

Key Messages:

1) The stalled front may lead to isolated showers and storms this evening.
2) High pressure will result in drier weather and clearer skies tomorrow.

Currently, a weak front lies along the Virginia/North Carolina border, with surface flow predominantly from the east/northeast above the front. The combination of afternoon heating and remaining boundary layer moisture has already triggered a few showers. Intensified heating and greater convergence along the boundary are expected to increase activity over the coming hours, with the highest confidence for rain and storms in the northwest North Carolina mountains, extending into southwest Virginia and southeast West Virginia. Rain and storm intensity is expected to wane this evening as the heat dissipates.

The skies will clear progressively overnight as the high pressure from the Great Lakes strengthens its hold on the region. Fog is likely to form after midnight, particularly in mountainous areas and river valleys.

Saturday will see improved conditions under the stronger influence of high pressure, with drier weather and mostly sunny skies. An isolated mountain shower might occur in the North Carolina mountains due to lingering easterly flow, but it is highly probable that the majority of the region will stay dry.
