Finally going into production on what is probably the biggest book project of my career (considering I’ve designed over 1,000 books, this is saying something).

For my client, the Seattle School District: an updated edition of the History of Seattle Public Schools … 520 pages, hundreds of photos & detailed formatting. Months and months of work.

Phew.

SFP: What do you think hasn’t been done in disabled literature that could be done?

AC: "... Disabilities belong in the future of humanity, despite what CRISPR scientists say. Despite what medical technology is trying to tell us. I’d love to see more science fiction with actual disabled characters, not just military characters with old war wounds. Tired disabled tropes perpetuate constantly in science fiction as well as horror. I want to read how someone who’s deaf, hard of hearing, blind, operates a space freighter. I want to read about someone with severe anxiety who copes with space walks. I want so many stories that haven’t been either created or published/produced yet because of the ablest gatekeeping of our society."

We're extremely happy and humbled that READYING TO RISE has been nominated for the Washington State Book Awards for 2022, in the category of Creative Non-fiction.
Along with Marcus' thanks, we are grateful to all the judges and Washington Center for The Book itself for this honor!

It’s an immense honor (and somewhat surreal) to have Readying to Rise named a 2022 Washington State Book Awards finalist!
