The LA Dunton is undergoing a massive restoration at the Henry B DuPont Preservation Shipyard at and one of the first steps is to correct the hull’s shape by jacking up the bow. Decades of fishing the great banks of the East Coast of the US has caused the ends of the boat to flatten out while the hull at the chain plates to be pulled up, called hogging. After fishing for five decades off the coast of New England, the schooner LA Dunton was purchased by in 1963. Mystic felt she was important because she was one of the few surviving fishing schooners of the era and served as an important historical representation of the fleet. Fifty one years later, the Dunton is undergoing a massive restoration that will return her to her original condition and we have the director of the Henry B. A new ATB is live! In this episode we walk with the director of the Henry B. DuPont Preservation Shipyard at (and friend of the show) Walt Ansel about their newest restoration project, the LA Dunton. Built in 1921, this schooner fished the waters of the Grand Banks and Georges Banks for haddock and halibut. The ocean liner Andrea Doria collided with the Stockholm in the middle of the night in a fog bank off the coast of Nantucket. The Italian ship sank twelve hours after the collision and came to rest on her starboard side in 250 feel of water. Nicked named the “Everest of Wreck Diving” because of the technical skills needed to reach her, has claimed the lives of dozens of wreck divers. This means that he has to carry multiple bottles of gasses into the water, thankfully once he is in they become weightless and are no longer a weight burden. Known as Caisson Disease or The Bends, this was the first documented cases of Decompression Sickness and is something that SCUBA divers have to worry about each time they dive. Then she checks if the lobster is female and a proven breeder, if so they are tossed back in. It’s seems like a lot of hoops to just through, but these regulations ensure that the lobster industry will remain strong for future generations.
